Just heard both these on Planet Rock, and was struck by how crude the cover is, lacking the delicate heaviness of the original (and generally, I like Metallica).

Views?

If there is something that I really hate is Metallica, along with the boring AC DC.

I prefer the Metallica version, although it probably has something to do with being the version that I first heard and I am most familiar with.

The Metallica version sucks. Budgie are totally awesome.

Metallica don't hold a candle to Budgie as far as my ears go. I have the full studio discography relating to both bands and if someone were to steal my Metallica albums I wouldn't bat an eyelid. Budgie however I guard with my life.

Definitely Budgie, even though I heard Metallica's first.

I would be torn between Metallica's cover of Astronomy, compared to BOC's original.

Considering how unlistenable Garage Inc is, these results are not surprising.

I don't remember the original version by Budgie, but one shouldn't lose an opportunity to spit on the grave of Metallica.

I have to go with Budgie - no comparison..........Burke Shelley is leagues ahead of James Hetfield

I don't know Metallica's version so no vote. Although I love Budgie and this song, I must say that Breadfan has one of the most awkward drumming I've heard.

I didn't realise I had both these in my collection.
Kudo's to Metallica for covering a great song by a great band.
However the Budgie original slays Metallica's over compressed version.

Mmmmm, Metallica not too popular around these parts?

I'm not just addressing the topic question either.

One of the most influential metal bands of all time and some would say pioneers of what is now termed prog metal.  I know it's different strokes for different folks but surely some of these comments are a little disrespectful.

Metallica have no association with the creation of prog metal IMO. Sorry.

Come on: who in his/her right mind would listen to And Justice For All? Metallica was the worst thing ever happened to metal. Just look at the results of the poll and read the comments about 'Tallica all over the forum!
The worst band, I tell you!

Hahaha, now that's just silly. Whether you like them or not, there is no chance at all that they are even CLOSE to the worst thing that has happened to metal.

They are to metal what Steven Wilson or Rush are to prog-rock. Stern Smile

I don't see the metaphor here. What are Rush or Steven Wilson to prog rock?

THE BEGINNING OF THE END!!! Cry THE WORST THING EVER HAPPENED TO PROG ROCK!!!

Or that's what they look like when I read some comments about them on the forum...

The same thing could be applied on Metallica's case: I know that their latest albums are far from being good and enjoyable, but I have the feeling that the Metalli-bashing had become an acquired reflex for a lot of people despise of logic and sensible arguments.

Why of course the original by Budgie! Thats a no brainer....

Gotta go with Budgie but then I like the old school sound being  an old fart.

Not a Metallicaca fan as Dean would say....and I think the comments about Rush and Wilson being the end of prog rock is simply silly.

This actually happened to me. Everything from The Second album to the Black Album went. Eyelids duly not batted... well at first, maybe but then having anything stolen would do that.

The comparison is interesting. Amazing what correctly phrased hard rock rhythm guitar can do for a listener's preferences.

Amen, thank you.  I mean, even Garage Days is that bad, huh?  Who knew?  So Metallica never had anything to do with the creation of prog metal? What next, Ride The Lightning shouldn't have been made? Metallica were just whiffle thrash and Anthrax were ten times more brutal?

Yes, Metallica's version of Breadfan is metal-ised, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Hey, Anthrax wasn't too bad. Metallica wrote better music, but the ability was there in both cases. I'd say Anthrax's debut was better than Metallica's even (marginally).

Nothing against Anthrax, I do like them (though I do prefer Kill em all to Fistful of metal.  Just saying the Metalli-hate often gets out of proportion.

Much prefer the Budgie version.

There's been a few Metallica covers I have enjoyed, Whiskey in the Jar, Am I Evil? but overall as a band they just bore me to be honest.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

The only good thing about Metallica's version is that it ended up publicizing the superior Budgie version.
