Hip-Hop has a bad rep, and with guys like Lil' Wayne and Jay Z around this is no wonder! Just my personal opinions of course... However, underneath the macho gangster chauvinistic bullsh*t there is a core of real musicality, impressive groove architecture and poetry, a lot of the time improvised. So here is a thread to celebrate all that great stuff. Here's a few gems of my own:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A75MsdqU-jc" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A75MsdqU-jc (This one has Ron Carter on double bass, phenomenal album too)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-lRd7FzoLU" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-lRd7FzoLU (Seen these guys... Damn they have a tight band too, with Questlove on drums who also produces all the electronic grooves)
Myself, I love the jazzier stuff. But there's plenty of other straight ahead stuff out there which is amazing too.
Anyone else share my love for the genre?
N.B. My embedding function is having a grump so I've resulted in hyperlinks, sorry!

Would you like it if I posted this in every single prog thread I see? I don't understand why you can't just avoid a thread that you have no interest in as opposed to expressing your disinterest to everyone viewing.

Beastie Boys counts right?
I really love them, they have a lot of music for anyone who likes rock or jazz and of course the singing itself is really good.

One of my favorite hip-hop artist is Metazen. His music is on bandcamp and he really brings brilliantly written lyrical content as well as sometimes some post-rocky guitar passages.

ikr, listen to his stuff as "Del Tha Funky Homosapein", it's really good too
For me though, I haven't really explored too far past the classic hip-hop guys ie. Wu-Tang Clan, Tribe Called Quest, MF DOOM, Mos Def, and so on... At the moment, I don't really have the desire to explore the genre much more.

Meh. The first half of Yeezus is good, but the second is terrible. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a great album though.

Still no mention of MF DOOM? I've only heard Madvillainy but I like it and this guy is very interesting. I absolutely love the production of the album too (by Madlib).
EDIT: also, this track may be interesting to prog lovers:

Here's a song from an album I've been enjoying lately. It's not completely hip-hop (more R&B), but this song is pretty hip-hop-ish.

If you like Madlib, check out his album with J Dilla called "Jaylib", or pretty much anything else he produces.

I am mostly into the stuff that got produced in the 90s. Snoop, Dre, LL Cool J, Biggie, Nas, Mobb Deep, Cypress and all those cats. Then it's mostly Danish hip hop, which I won't bother you with.
I love Wu Tang from the era though, and especially the sideprojects were extremely good:
ODB:
Raekwon:
GZA:
Gravediggaz:
Cappadonna:
I love the early Busta stuff as well. First two albums are sweet!

I'm interested in this subject, even if it is just because I think drek like this is should be banned to asylums. So I'm going to post about it, welcome or not. It's awful. Horrible. Just can't stand it. I'm with Tom Ozric on this one. It's like a whack on the head.
And as this is a public post, I don't see why anyone (Tom) should be blasted for expressing his opinion, even if it doesn't suit the OP. Especially as it's my opinion as well

I don't really listen to any hip hop pretty much ever, but sometimes I run into something impressive. This is the latest such:
The guy who played it for me is in PA under the name Anderson III, he's a fine rapper.

Lately I've been curious about getting into more hip-hop. So far, all I've gotten into is DJ Shadow, Nicoals Jaar, and a few other experimental, instrumental artists, along with a few classic songs from artists like The Furious Five and the Sugarhill Gang. I'd be open to any suggestions you have, but if I'd especially like if it was sorta interesting and different, musically. Something really distorted would be cool, too. Lyrically I'd like something abstract and/or surreal.

I've just started to listen to De La Soul's De La Soul is Dead (nearly 25 years after its release... Yeah, I took the time): some excellent tracks, but it confirms that I don't have the patience for a 60 minutes hip-hop LP.
More contemporary, I also listened to Anti-Pop Consortium's Arrythmia (only ten years late this time...): instant hit for me. Even more contemporary, Ill Chemistry's first album (released last year), even if this duet explains being rather influenced by the hip-hop of late 80's/early 90's. Not bad, even if not all tracks are really strong.
