Not a good a year so far as last. It seems to be the year when record companies have gone into overdrive with remastering/ repackaging old releases.

best albums with Raven in the title:
Oliver Wakeman and Gordon Giltrap - Ravens and Lullabies
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing

A couple of nice ambient releases
Colin Edwin and Jon Durrant - Burnt Belief
Mogwai - Les Revenants

Excellent new neo prog release
Lifesigns - Lifesigns

none of them blow my socks off though

when's the next Anathema album due?!

I've used far too much of my dough on music this year, which probably explains why I'm so broke at the moment. Anyway, I bought music with it, which is always better than me using it on parties and boozeSmile
I've acquired a fair few releases from 13, but most of em aren't featured on PA.

Anyway these are:
Deafheaven - Sunbather
Steven Wilson - The Bird
Djam Karet - The Trip
Jaga Jazzist - Live with the Britten Sinfonia
Henry Fool - Men Singing

All of which are pretty goodThumbs Up
Looking very much forward to getting my hands on the new Guapo, Vespero, Ukandanz, Rhün, Sigur Ros, Setna, Mogwai and some others that I forget right now(probably for the best too!)

Not on PA:

Jon Hopkins - Immunity
Boards Of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
The Knife - Shaking The Habitual
Primal Scream - More Light
Autechre - Exai
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - ll

It's out. Release date was originally August 1st, but they delayed it (has to do with leaking or something, I don't really remember). But when the leak happened (at August 17th), Ulver made the digital version of the album available for purchase on their bandcamp. Don't know about vinyl or CD version though.

The new album is indeed excellent. After only one listen I'm not ready to proclaim it best ever by Ulver but it certainly makes the case for top 3 at this stage for me.

^Yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to that Vespero album too. Right now I'm terribly broke, so it'll have to wait. Their last one Subkraut was definitely good, but I prefer By The Waters Of Tomorrow. Weird since I tend to go for the Krautrock, but with these guys, I find that the more 'focused' they get - the better.
The new Papir album is very good - the tracks have become more "refined" if you will - more purposeful. Still got that swaying riffing nature about them, but the sound has evolved imo. Gonna post a review of it sometime soon(hopefully).

So far:-

1.  Steven Wilson - The Raven
2.  Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
3.  Amplifier - Echo Street

I think the new Sabbath is pretty good too, just like they were back in the early-mid 70s.

So I listened to Thom Yorke's Atoms For Peace - Amok release, and was quite surprised to hear just how much it sounds like the new Jon Hopkins' album ImmunityShocked WTF?!?! May just be the best thing I've heard from him outside of The Pyramid Song. Never been a fan of Radiohead, but this solo project sounds really scrumptious to me.

I may have to listen to some more Radiohead thenLOL I don't think I've ever heard em like this...

BTW Have you checked out Ukandanz yet? One of my fave releases this year that combines a funky RIOesque form of avantguarde music with Ethiopian music?
Steve(HolyMoly) wrote a brilliant review of it - awarding it with the full monty.

It's a goody!

My opinion of it has been recently shaded somewhat upon realizing that a lot of the tunes are actually covers, albeit extremely well arranged covers. I listened to a couple of the originals and they were great too!   It's still a thoroughly enjoyable album though, if not quite as "original" as I had previously thought.

Ethiopian jazz and popular tunes, mostly.

The opening track on Ukandanz's album is a cover of this:

Oh that's too bad. I haven't listened to it yet, but certainly I'd like to form some kind of an opinion of the album soon.
Andy Edwards is a pretty good drummer and did fill in adequately for Paul Cook with IQ

I'd like to know what you think of it. Edwards is a brilliant drummer and his influence on IQ even for short space of time was obvious. Perhaps Magenta is just to much about Rob Reed. I actually prefer both Chris Fry's and Christina's solo albums to the last couple of Magenta albums.

Great album, even though it's probably the least heavy Haken album so far.

You can choose more than one. :) But anyway, that Anciients album is pretty cool. I've gotta spin it a few more times, but the opening track 'Raise the sun' is phenomenal. And the bonus track 'Humanist' is absolutely wild.
Talented band and from CANADA!! Yay!

I've only purchased 5 albums released this year. Any other suggestions? I also plan to check out the English Electrics, as there's a lot of hype over those two album. It's been good to know that every album I've bought from this year has been worth the money.

1) Haken - The Mountain
2) Steven Wilson - The Raven that Refused to Sing
3) Dream Theater - Dream Theater
4) Coheed & Cambria - The Afterman: Descension
5) Daft Punk - Random Access Memories (though not prog)
