OK, now, I, like all other Mars Volta fans, love the guitar work on L'via. Wow, I always said, great work Omar. But then, yesterday, I'm reading the booklet for the album and it says that John Frusciante plays the first two guitar solos on L'via! Aah, that's annoying.
Anyone else know this???? |

Being an owner of the album, yes.  Fruciante has a much different style than Omar......have you heard the Tremulent EP? Flea (also RHCP) has supported TMV throughout and can be heard on trumpet on Francis...................... I Also note that John Frusciante wrote the "editorial - well at least the first piece - in the Q/Mojo Prog special. In passing, to the older prog heads out there: how much did that special add to your knowledge..................? So far, that a lot of people are prepared to write thumbnail sketches about Soft Machine - 4th by a 4th author in 3 years I've read (and I've been involved in the research for two of them) and interesting to note three of them have been written from either the prog rock or the straighter jazz viewpoints. Only one author has done the research to be able to write a full biography of ~350 pages. |

They did mention Gentle Giant in that mag though and they did alert me to Pavolv's Dog so that was cool... The worst part was what they said about modern prog/art rock whatever - Cave In = Rush meets Bad Religion & Coheed & Cambria = Rush meets Linkin Park - my god, have they actually heard BR and LP!? urgh it reminded it me of that horrible taste you get in your mouth after eating a remegel! ......On the Frusciante point, they're friends, they have shared musical interests and aspirations, they're all musicians....Omar could have played his own composition on it no doubt but it's kinda cool they wanted Mr F's sound and participation........Flea's not the only Trumpet blower out there but they chose him, if you can collaborate with someone that shares the vibe of the essence of what you're doing and can play then it's poetry....and if they're a friend even better. Be interesting to ask them though, like I wonder if Omar was thinking "man I dunno I just can't get that bit to sound right" in walks John Chilli Pepper and does his thang on the fret board and he's in like Flynn!

I agree on all your points. And like you, the piece in Q Classics on Cave In and Coheed was so way off the mark. I doubt they listened to Cave In or Coheed properly. This is the trouble with some mags, they make rather absurd statements about bands based on 30 seconds of a song or what some else has told them. Shame really, as it may put people off those 2 bands. I'm sure a lot of people know Coheed, but Cave In are not as well known, but would definitely be appreciated by prog fans on this forum. omar is still an excellent guitarist. l'via is just of the amazing guitar works of their career. and omar does play those solos if they play it live. in fact omar actually wrote the parts for john to play. ------------- The Worthless Recluse

| Yeah i knew it, at this moment in time John Frusciante (Dont say he isnt, liten to his solo albums, watch him live its pretty much indesputable that he has the better technique, if you say otherwise its just because your a TMV fanboy) is a superior guitarist to Omar so the guest solos were a nice addition IMO. |

When I saw them live he played a strange variation of it with phaser distortion, very cool, it didnt flow the same way (omar has a very cool almost jerky technique) but very awesome nonetheless. |

All his solo work is great, I agree. I hope some of those facets of his solo work get into the new RCHP albun (coming soon!) |

Wow, I was not aware of this. I need to start reading liner notes! My
appreciation for Frusciante just got bumped up a notch. In the past
I've found him to be on the sloppy side.

Guys, don't get me wrong, I know the album very well. I've always known Flea and Frusciante were on the album. I love Flea's trumpet on Miranda. But I had always thought that Omar played the first two L'via solos, seeing as I never read the liner notes that closely. |

Basically, Gildenlow wouldn't attend the last US tour in protest of new US policy. Stolt felt that a band member should, well, be committed.
