1977 and things are looking up!  The big dogs are back flexing their prog muscles with new albums from Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and ELP (though in ELP's case neither Works Vol 1 or Vol 2 got anywhere near cracking the top 25, coming in dead last at spots #41 and #42).  Also of note, a certain mighty 3 piece from Toronto has officially arrived and followed last years #6 album with "A Farewell to Kings" at the #2 spot.  If you don't like Rush, be scared...be very scared.  They're here to stay!

Once again, these are the top 25 PA ranked albums with at least 100 ratings presented in order of their QWR scores highest to lowest.

Vote for your favourite 1977 prog album!

Lots of great choice but Enigmatic Ocean is a sensational classic. One of the finest jazz-rock albums ever!

So many incredible albums here it's almost unbelievable!! Must have been a great year! I'll go with animals because it's the album that made me play music but there is at least 10 other albums who could have been my favourite !

I haven't picked a Yes album yet for on eof these so I could go with Going for the One or possibly Aja, Animals, Ocean, Geese and the Ghost, even Point of Know Return.

I actually haven't heard of National Health, so thats something new to check out! Thumbs Up

Extremely tough one for me; but I'll go with Animals, probably my favourite Floyd album. Very close are Genesis, Yes, Kansas, Supertramp, Tull and Rush. This is one of the tightest contests for me as I could've voted for many here!

IS QUITE HARD TO VOTE, LOTS OF EXCELLNT ALBUMS IN THAT YEAR, A VERY STRONG ONE FOR SURE

Songs From the Wood - Jethro Tull

Very tough choice this year as I rank the albums from Yes, Genesis, Floyd, Rush, & Grobschnitt very strong 4 star equals each with great songs.  The only way to choose a fave is to eliminate those with the weakest moments:

Do not like Wondrous Stories...Yes is out.
Cannot stand Your Own Special Way...Genesis is out.
The middle section of Dogs is tedious...no Floyd.
Side 2 of Kings is weak until Cygnus X-1...no Rush.

Rockpommel?  Can't find anything bad to say about it, especially the bonus track CD release so it gets my vote Thumbs Up

Almost went with Animals, a more obvious pick, but I've been listening to I Robot a lot lately and I'm continually impressed by how masterful an album it is.  It's a lot like Dark Side of the Moon.

Too true!   '76 was a bit of a let-down but '77 came back very strong.  Here's a list of some big names that didn't make the top 25.

#26 - Quark Strangeness and Charm - Hawkwind
#27 - Criminal Record - Rick Wakeman
#29 - Before and After Science - Eno
#31 - The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome - Van Der Graaf
#32 - Rain Dances - Camel
#35 - PG1 - Peter Gabriel
#39 - The Missing Piece - Gentle Giant
#42 - Works Vol I - ELP
#43 - Works Vol II - ELP

Some other great '77 PA rated prog that didn't make the cut because it has less than 100 ratings:

The Kick Inside - Kate Bush (her amazing debut album)
Earthly Paradise - Epidaurus
Open Up - Ethos
Galleons of Passion - Finch
Happy the Man - s/t
Listen Now - Phil Manzanera
Le Petit Violon de Monsieur Gregoire - Mona Lisa
Halloween - Pulsar : rated at 3.93 but just missed the cut with 93 ratings Unhappy

I also love '77 because it produced one of my fave hard rock albums of all time:
Let There Be Rock - AC/DC Headbanger

Good choices!  Mine is "Going For The One," one of my favorite Yes platters.

"Awaken" is one of their all-time best works, and it has many innovative features.

Otherwise I think I would have picked "Animals."

Great year!
From the list, i voted for Eloy-Ocean.
My favorite records from that year (not listed) are
Prog
    Gentle Giant-The Missing Piece
    Wallenstein-No More Love
Helmut Koellen-You Won't See Me (prog related)
Heavy rock
     Moxy -Ridin High
     Dirty Tricks-Hit and Run
     Judas Priest-Sin After Sin
     Billion Dollar Babies-Battle Axe

As far as live shows go, i was lucky enough to see Rush on the A Farewell To Kings tour in April of '77, as a mere lad of 14! Great concert.

That's right, that was 1977 too!  I gave that one 5 stars, and actually have just finished listening to an audiobook about it (from the 33 1/3 Series).  A fascinating album that I've loved for decades (art decades, one might say).

Cool, '77 was a great year for live concerts for me too...I was only 17 but had an older friend into prog...even more important, he had wheels and gas money Thumbs Up

FEB: Genesis: Wind and Wuthering tour - Winterland Ballroom SF
APR: Renaissance (with comedian Steve Martin headlining): Paramount Theater Oakland
MAY: Jethro Tull: Songs from the Wood tour - Oakland Arena
JUL: Led Zeppelin (with Judas Priest & Rick Derringer) - Oakland Coliseum (this was the infamous show the day after Richard Cole had beaten up Bill Grahams son - the final US show before Bonzo died)
AUG: ELP (with Journey): Works tour (no orchestra) - Oakland Arena
SEP: Yes (with Donovan): Going for the One tour - Oakland Arena (I was there both nights)

The only show I wanted to see but couldn't get tickets for was the Pink Floyd Animals tour in May.  They sold out 2 nights at the huge outdoor Oakland Coliseum in like 15 minutes Pig

A fine year 1977 was really. I'm another one who has trouble to pick one album from the whole bunch. In the end I chose Tull's Songs. But Yes with GFTO or Genesis W & W or Rush's A Farewell To King are really very close behind...

Hmmm, thinking about Awaken from GFTO I'm rather bewildered - I love this song a lot.... But staying by Tull this time.

I've always considered W&W a '77 release and wasn't sure this was a serious question so I had a look on wiki...it lists the release year as '76.  Then I had a look at our PA database...it lists '77 but has the following note:

Released, depending on a country, in December 1976 / January 1977

Is there some kind of standard interpretation PA follows in cases like this?  Any PA admins reading this that could comment?

Aja, then Kansas, JT and Genesis.

The earlier comments about whether W&W was a 76 or 77 release brings up a good point.  Albums were not routinely released internationally back then so some of these records have multiple release dates.  Also, the world moved a lot more slowly and albums took a lot more time to achieve distribution and airplay then they do now.  So 'Leftoverture' was partially recorded in 1975 and released in 1976, but didn't peak on the charts until 1977 and became one of the top 20 selling albums of that year.  'Animals' was also a bigger seller in 1977 than it was in 1976, as were 'Songs from the Wood' and 'Even in the Quietest Moments'.  I only mention this because as someone for whom 1977 was a peak music year, it's hard to recognize W&W and Leftoverture as 1976 albums even though they were technically released then.  For that matter Dreamboat Annie was recorded in 1975 and released in early 1976, but it still seems like a 1977 album to me because that's when it was all over the radio and late-night music shows.

Well poo, that invalidates my vote.

1. Songs From the Woods
2. Geese and Ghost
3. Moroccan Roll
4. Ocean
5. Enigmatic Ocean
6. Wind and Wuthering
7. Elegant Gypsy

If Pulsar had made the list, 'Halloween' would have been my top choice by a couple of light years.

This would have definitely been my choice, but as it stands, Wind and Wuthering. Which is a pretty good stand in I think!

For me '77 was the best year ever for prog.  2 of my 3 favourite albums are Animals and GFTO, both from '77.

Add in the albums by Ashra, Genesis (Seconds Out is missing from the list), Eloy's best, three (!) of Schulze's best, TD's Encore (missing) and the amazing and almost unknown Black Noise by FM to name but a few and you have a hell of a year.

As for the vote, it's got to be Animals.

Glad to hear it. I'm a stickler for accuracy.

The same thing goes for ATOAT, in scandinavia and holland it was a 1975 release.

Wind and Wuthering was actually released in 1976. December 27th of that year but still 1976. Tongue

Wow, just looked at wiki and while it correctly reports W&W as a late '76 release it lists the first release of ATOTT on 2/2/76 in the UK so they missed the boat on this.

Where will this end?  Was The Lamb a '73 release in Jamaica LOL

I couldn't have voted for it as number one, but it would have been in my top five.

i believe that's why there's that confusion on being released in '76 or '77

Nice one Clap

Also one of my favorite heavy metal albums was released that year, Judas Priest's Sin After Sin.

cool, but why don't classic rock radio stations play songs from this album i have no idea; that is just bullsh*t.

1313 just over Mirage on the list.   Franco Leprino's Integrati... Disintegrati would have been my choice had it made the list.

Wind & Wuthering. This was a vote for Blood on the Rooftops and In That Quiet Earth. Otherwise I would have voted for the Geese & the Ghost or Animals. Or Eloy's Ocean maybe, I haven't heard that in so long.

Hmmmmm...I've always considered W&W to be a 1976 album, probably because that's when it was originally released.

Lots of good ones here. The Geese and the Ghost; Feels Good to Me; Going for the One; Songs from the Wood; National Health; Morrocan Roll. Dang. 1977 was a pretty good year for prog, considering both punk and disco were in full swing. And new wave was really getting started.

Genesis' Wind & Wuthering was released in Dec of 1976 not in 1977 so this should be omitted from the list. Anyway, I went with Animals, which is, quite simply, one of my favorite albums of all-time.

Just coudn't let Forse Le Lucciole Non Si Amano Piu - Locanda della Fate without having a honorable vote here, this masterpiece is my favourite easily above the ones here from Genesis and Yes. But I forgot I had already voted for Eloy - Ocean, I think this poll should allow us more than only one single vote, given the good albums in the list.
