Can't believe this hasn't been posted yet, but see here:   http://www.dgmlive.com/diaries.htm?diarist=3

"So, King Crimson is in motion. This is a very different reformation to what has gone before: seven players, four English and three American, with three drummers.

The Seven-Headed Beast of Crim is in Go! mode."   Clap

SAAAWEEEEET!!!!!
3 drummers eh?LOL I'm taking a wild stab in the dark here, but this could prove to be the world's first prog stomp album. Either way, I am really looking forward to it. Wasn't that big on the last KC project. Too much vaseline and no real zing. Pleasant but mostly forgettable imo.

Nailed it...I would have added a pinch of `kind of bland and a bit dull' too.

Doesn't ruin the reputation, but...you know...

This (whatever comes out of this news) will be the best new thing of the decade by any of the classic 'big six' bands.  At the end of the year 2020 we'll look back and say so.

Really excited by this with a couple of caveats, not really sure about 3 drummers, I would have prefered a percussionist, seems like overkill, I hope Jakko's main input is vocal and not songwriting.

I don't think that VDGG are considered one of the classic Big Six.  Last decade: Genesis - no releases; Pink Floyd - no releases; Jethro Tull - no releases (unless you count Thick as a Brick II, but since Ian Anderson solo that is a short stretch; Yes - Fly From Here; ELP - No Releases.  King Crimson - The Power To Believe (2003)

With that lineup, it seems like something really new will come out of this, which would be great.

Just hit the Discipline site and had to read this three times to be sure I wasn't dreaming Wink

Very excited to see Mel Collins signing on...next to Jaxon he's my fave winds guy.  Interesting...no Belew...I always felt his personality was too dominant in the 80's/90's/00's Crimso and I'm very curious to hear what they write without his lyric and vocal input...if in fact this 7 headed Hydra has any room for vocals with 3 drummers!

Very excited. As far as I'm concerned, The Power To Believe was the last KC album, everything else has been KC ProjeKcts, which may have some similarities to various KC-albums. Similar to King Crimson-proper, but not the same, and not worth comparing to this new lineup.

If Bob wants to follow the lead of all the other prog bands (Yes, Pink Floyd, etc.) he can have his own cruise!  They could call it "In the Wake of Poseidon".

Or something.  I bet Toyah would love that, especially if it made money!

This is great indeed. I thought Mr Fripp was done with King Crimson... But he has said that King Crimson would return whenever he was needed... or something like that. So, I guess it is time. We'll see if King Crimson remains as innovative and ground breaking as they are reputed to be.

Not one of the 'Big 6', but same generation and that was a good album.

Fantastic! I love Belew, but in some ways it's more exciting not having him involved in this lineup, feels like more of a real new KC era, rather than a continuation of the 80s-2000s (although, it of course will be that to some extent). Could easily be disappointing, but will doubtless be interesting.

One point, relating to any live shows they do: is Jakko's voice high enough to cover Belew's range/songs? Could it be that instead, they do versions of some of the 70s vocal songs (which Belew didn't perform as far as I'm aware, except Schizoid Man) which are more in his range? Though I guess it's largely unlikely, three drummers would suggest continuing to move in the same direction they've been going, which wouldn't really fit with that, but you never know, there could be some rearrangements.

Good new , great that BR is onboard, his work with Fripp have been some of my best Fripp moments for years, they fit !

And Collins off course, was a lack of acustic instruments in KC.

But i hope we dont get anything like the last one, was without ball's.

I certainly hope new material will surface at some point.

At the very least I hope they officially release physical something if all they are going to do is tour. The three drummers thing is still too good a prospect to just throw away like that.

well well well, retirement my ass, eh bob?

ive waited for a crimson with Levin to come back, and mel Collins can play, even wail, but im afraid that 'A scarcity of miracles' is the most accurate album title ever, they could have even called it 'no miracles at all', so I am very apprehensive about this effort

that being said, i'll likely attend if anywhere near boston

ugh, why couldn't it be like, fripp, muir, mastelloto, wetton and Levin, and Collins? that would be interesting if completely impossible

wonder whats up with Adrian these days, out of the NIN project, our of crimson, no info out there for a long time

If they are not going to do any new material, I just hope they will improve on material that needs improvement on such as some songs from the Beat recording that may benefit from three drummers, just don't try to improve upon the classics like Larks Tongues ..., Red, etc.

Actually would like to see them interpret some of Slipknot's songs, whose technical proficency with three percussionists was often lost by boringly playing fastly intense all the time.

Hope they do some new material though.

Some Q&As from Belew:

q: are you in the new King Crimson planned for next september 2014?

a: no. after 32 years I am no longer in King Crimson.

q: were you asked to be in the new King Crimson?

a: no, I was not. robert informed me in an email that he was starting a 7-piece version of the band. he said I would not be right for what the band is doing.

q: so, how do you feel?

a: "happy with what I have to be happy with". which is quite a lot.

I'm busy creating something I've wanted to create all my life, something which has never been done. FLUX: never the same twice. creatively I'm exploding with new ideas, songs, and music. in 60 days I'll be touring south america with my beloved Power Trio and next spring I'll be touring europe with Crimson Project, which is a celebration of the crimson music
tony, pat, and I have help create. life is great.

q: what would you like to say to crimson fans about the new King Crimson?

a: my advice is to check it out and if you like it: support it.
and on that note: thanks to all of you for your continued support of my music.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't a scarcity of miracles actually NOT a king crimson album? I was under the impression it was a different project. So I'm not understanding all the comparisons.

As for the 3 drummers, I'd guess its most likely the 2 drummer set up that crimson had a few years back when they still toured with Belew, plus some guy who makes sound effects such as another Jamie Buir. Crimson has never actually ventured into so called world music so I doubt they'll do something as interesting as adding bongos, djembe, or tabla.

What's their next step? 5 drummers, 4 bass players, 8 saxophones and one Fripp?

Hi,

I like the 3 drummers idea.

One goes left, the other goes right and the other goes, who knows where, and he can take the guitar in any direction he feels like, and it will be a treat to see how well everyone goofs around and allows him the freedom to move around with the guitar, which I think is what he wants to do, something that would be a much more rock-like version of some of his solo albums without the song pretexts in the way!

If that is the case, this will be worth checking out! If it's just a bunch of songs, I doubt that this will be worth a nickel, though I trust Robert enough, to feel that it will be worth it.

I would like to see some serious free form stuff, and see the changes each night in concert. That would be a treat, and it would show that one of the game's best improvisational artists, is still at it, and not afraid to do it!

I understand that Fripp is indeed particularly interested in touring, and and I'd really like to see them if they come close. However, I would rather get to hear some of the songs I really love that haven't been able to hear live. Some improvs during the concert would be very cool indeed, since it wouldn't be a Crimson concert otherwise. But if the show consisted only of improvs, I'm afraid I might just as well pass on it, it's kind of expensive and time consuming going on a 3 hour trip and back, plus ticket prices, and not be totally sure I'll love it.

OMFG!!

I'm so out of touch with prog-news, that until today (December 15) I heard about these news!!

I'm a little sad that Adrian B won't be in the project, but nevertheless, the beast is back!!

I'm guessing they will tour otherwise why bother putting all this together. An album imo is less likely than a tour(look at the band Kansas for proof of touring as more lucrative than recording). Anyway, I'll consider seeing them if they play in my area. If there is going to be a new album then it goes without saying that should be an automatic purchase for many of us.

Great news they are still kicking.

I had a hold of a rare KC vinyl album and wanted some opinions from the Crimsonians out there.

The album was the vinyl of second studio release In the Wake of Poseidon complete with Pink Island label so is original pressing. very good condition, dealer selling for another guy on consignment and wanted $70 Aus for it. Its a lot of money really for what it is tho I was tempted.

Would anyone out there pay that much for it?

I know it looked nice with gatefold and great cover art but pushing nigh to $100 for an album stretched it for me. I did like the copy the dealer had of vinyl Genesis TLLDOBroadway, and TD's Phaedra - both in exc condition and rare original pressings. Anyway just throwing it out there.

So if you haven't been paying attention, King Crimson are now in rehearsals.

A 5 second clip of the drummers here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=896304393718925&set=vb.100000181177250&type=2&theater" rel="nofollow - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=896304393718925&set=vb.100000181177250&type=2&theater

Yes. If you look further on the page, there's a brief clip of Rieflin playing A Sailor's Tale, and Schizoid Man and Red are also confirmed. Also, Rieflin also plays mellotron.

Jeez! I thought one guy would be playing a full drumset, another a drumset with ethnic percussion and the other with percussion you couldn't play from a stool (gongs and whatnot)--not 3 full drumsets!

Very nice 3 drummers---but I think Bruford used to be able to do that and get the same effect with one hand tied behind his backLOL
