I don't find any of the two extravagant (I don't consider Therion prog by any chance) - but I do like them both, Therion more in my late teens/early 20's. I prefer Ayreon overall

I bought the Lemuria-Sirius B double package album and don't like either of those at all so have not heard any other Therion. Ayreon easily. And Arjen is a pretty cool dude as well

I find this one a bit difficult. To begin with, I'm more of a prog fan (and prog metal fan, too), so that gives Ayreon the edge. Second, I'm not really fond of the satanic lyrics often found on Therion (or at least black magic, ocultist, lyrics), so that is a negative point for them. However, I do enjoy the music Therion has done, and the way they include the operatic vocals (and orchestrations) in their music, I might even think they are the masters at doing that (I believe they were the beginners)... and the album "Secret of the Runes" is a real masterpiece for me... I believe I like that one better than any Ayreon album as a whole.

Neither
Both bands are starting to sound predictable, both have found a recipe for success and are abusing it already.

Ayreon are so brilliant.
I love all their albums esp Human Equation, Electric castle and 01001001 Human Migrator part 2 has some amazing music on it too
Therion are a different beast. a bit hit and miss for me . Loved this one
hated this one
but they are an interesting group
having said that Ayreon will smash this

Just had a look at my old Therion review of Miskolc... wow I slammed it hahaha
Do you guys agree with my take on it?
as follows:
The DVD I watched patiently as one classical piece after another was played and I began to long for 'Sirius B'. I had to skip through the classical stuff. It was painful to listen to that tenor and those screeching violins. Finally, the second part of the set began. 'The Blood of Kingu' is belted out. The singer springs out from the wings and bangs his head trying to get audience members to do likewise. They comply like angry goats. The orchestra members look at one another in bemusement, some look like they want to escape through the nearest rabbit hole. It is quite amusing and worth a look if nothing else for that particular moment. My wife watched and said, "Those orchestra members look so worried, like a fish out of water," I think she nailed it. The whole performance is out of place. It would have been better to just have this set and nothing else. Talk about waking up your audience after all that sleepy Wagner! 'Sirius B' is next and it is incredible. Then one Therion treasure after another is given the full blown orchestra meets metal treatment. Nothing wrong with that but it's all too late. I had already been frustrated out of my mind with the first set. The other great tracks include 'Eternal Return', 'Draconian Trilogy' and 'Schwarzalbenheim (Svartalfheim)'. It is a great concert in this section and worth a curious look. However the problem is the opening section is really so geared towards lovers of classical opera that metal fans are going to be turned away. Therion are operatic metal but this is taking it too far. Unfortunately, the CD package is only available in this expensive box set and not worth the trouble.

Therion by far for me. They have so many great songs and albums.
Ayreon just never resonated with me for the most part, but I'll definitely check out their new album.

Ayreon, Arjen Anthony Lucassen is a genius.

Me neither oddly enough, since I love female-fronted metal like Nightwish, Within temptation, After Forever, etc.
I have a couple of Ayreon albums (Universal Migrator & 10101010) and while they are cool albums, very well done for what they are, I just don't find myself wanting to listen to them all that often.
I love Arjen's solo album though 'Lost In The New Real'
What's a good Therion album to start out with? Nothing to weird...something with good standard melodies and such rather than experimental.

But Therion aren't a Female fronted metal band in the traditional sense. As far as I understand, they don't have (and have never had) a soprano female vocalist as an official vocalist and image of the band. But they do have lots of female vocals, and operatic vocals, and also male vocals, both kind of operatic or up your face rockers (though very seldon do they gent into grunting teritorry). However, there's one particular female singer they have used often who sounds just amazing, though I think she has not gone on tour with them, mainly because she doesn't have the looks. You can hear her if you search for the song "Midgard" on youtube (make sure it's the studio version) it first begins with some male vocals, and at about the second 40 kicks in a female soprano... and that's among my favourite vocal moments in female fronted metal. If you want to get an idea of this band, you might just as well want to check the same album where this song comes from, it's "Secret of the Runes". I really love that album, every song is really beautiful, though it's got very little prog (and lots of operatic vocals). However, it seems many of the hardcore fanst of this band don't put this album among their favourites (I guess most of them at least like it, though), so if my sugestion doesn't work for you, you might want to try another one. Oh yeah, I also like this album so much because I really love viking mythology, and this one is full of it, but then again, if the music wasn't so good I wouldn't like it however much I like it's concept.

I got big hopes for Therion's- Beloved Antichrist. Can't get more ambitious than a full blown opera.
