Hello fellow proggers,
I am just getting into isis and the whole atmospheric/sludge metal scene and i was wondering if you guys could recommend some Isis albums to start with. The reason I am getting into this type of music is because I have always been a fan of music setting and atmosphere and i believe Isis sets an atmosphere in each of their pieces of music. Could you also recommend some bands that are similar to isis and that fit into the category of atmospheric metal? Thanks guys, hope you have a good day.

Oceanic and Panopticon are their best, but I think all of their albums are worth listening to (repeatedly)

If you like Isis, you might also enjoy: Neurosis, Cult of Luna, *shels, OM.  If you like black metal at all, also check out Alcest and Agalloch.

The first one Celestial is the most traditional sludge-metal sounding. The next two, Oceanic and Panopticon, are their most popular albums and probably the 'best'. In The Absence Of Truth is their most post-rock sounding (as opposed to post-metal).

The band Red Sparowes are an offshoot of Isis. They play post-rock with a twangy steel guitar added. Both bands were hugely influenced by Mogwai (especially that band's earlier albums).

I only didn't mention them because it's all instrumental, which isn't necessarily what OP is looking for.  Great band.

Instrumental will definitely suffice as well!

Personally I feel their last, Wavering Radiant, is their best. I'll also suggest Fen.

One more thing, I noticed Isis has another release called Edgar's hair. I saw this on google play but every other site that lists their discography does not show Edgar's hair. Does anyone here on the forum know what's up with that?
