Subject: Current great rock bands?
Date Posted: December 27 2013 at 10:15
I would like to ask this...the late 80s to early 00s seemed
to have such a great number of good rock bands: Smashing Pumpkins, RageATM, Chili
Peppers, Janes, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Oasis, Breeders, Green DAy, White
Stripes, Radiohead, Pixies, Wilco, Cranberries, Phish, Beck, Babes in
Toyland, No doubt, Spoon, to name a few.....
What are the comparable current rock bands of this decade? I'd like to check some out. Please don't give a huge list, but just the one or two bands/albums I should most check out.
(Looking for generally mainstream rock here, not pop, rap, or prog. Also, this thread seeks bands who began after 2000 and still active.)

Good luck with this, Jim, generally the only thing around today is the latest generic X Factor/XXX's Got Talent/Cover artist garbage, or what is considered R&B by today's standards! Brainless pap
My guess is something like Coldplay would probably be closest. Not too thrilling.
Best to run back to the blissful sanctuary that is prog and ignore all this other guff!

I recently purchase New Horizons from the band The Answer. I read an article about them in Classic Rock magazine and they want to be the next big thing.
I'd say that you might want to check out Alter Bridge. They are the continuation of the band Creed, with Myles Kennedy as lead vocalist. (You may know him from being Slash's current vocalist).

I created a top 100 non-prog list from Progfreak, which seemed to have many AOR bands on it which I really enjoy but if that isn't your thing, probably wouldn't work and since the bands are not well known wouldn't really qualify as "great". A couple of bands/artists that did show up were Arcade Fire and Joe Bonamassa (if you are looking for something in a blues rock vein). Another band that came up was Airbourne, who are an AC/DC-like band that might appeal if you like that kind of thing.

There are many other good artists, but these are the ones I feel most confident recommending. I'll let others handle the other artists.

I'm not the biggest fan but you may enjoy Kings Of Leon and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Trombone Shorty, a mix of rock blues funk r&b wrapped up in a New Orleans jazz flavor. I have the Backatown album. Very good!
May not be the "rock" category but it does get heavy in places. Some big names participated, Jeff Beck and others.

Most of the ones I know about are obscure local artists who haven't released albums yet. A couple of these are https://myspace.com/rubyarmada" rel="nofollow - Ruby Armada and http://www.deltasolrevival.com/" rel="nofollow - Delta Sol Revival , both of whom are working on albums and have several tracks uploaded to their websites. Ruby Armada is a hard-hitting alternative/punk rock band with blunt, direct material that's still complex enough to be interesting. DSR is a blues/rock/funk/latin fusion group composed of some really talented musicians. Their music is quirky eclectic retro-type stuff that is a joy to listen to.

I just discovered the band Tame Impala. Retro-ish indie psych-rock. I think you would really enjoy them. For some reason I'm currently unable to post videos, but you can easily find them on youtube.

I will limit myself to two suggestions for the time being ... in the britpop revival, Kaiser Chiefs were quite good, especially their first two albums (there third was nothing special and I haven't even bothered with their fourth after hearing the samples).
The indie 'scene' has spawned many great bands, I am especially fond of those associated with the experimental edges of the genre, I pretty much started with Deerhoof and went through related artists on lastfm and loved them all. Given your tastes Jim, I would say Fiery Furnaces might be a good way to dig into that scene...

Flash reactions....
Grizzlies - not bad. like Midlake. Silversun - nice. will be listening to more. Arcade - I've heard some, not bad. Black Keys - Heard them, not bad. My morning Jacket - Have a few cds, good stuff. Joe B - Friends been pushing him for years, thus far without success Vampire Weekend - warrants further exploration Electric Six - hilarious, will check out more Biffy Clyro - pretty good Delta Sol - rump shakin' Car Seat Headrest - lo fi as advertised, but promising, like it! Unknown Mortal - cool, warrants more listens Parquet Courts - if I tell you I'd have to kill you Alter Bridge - "reminds me of crap they play through the P.A. after the actual concert
is over, the smoke going down and everyone stumbling out of the venue.
The party over music." -YT comment that made me laugh, harsh. Talented guys, not sure it's my thing, will listen more. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - yeah, indeed Kaisers - so far so good
So I saw HAIM on SNL a few weeks ago and kind of liked it. Should I be punched for that? Reminded me of Luscious Jackson a little.
Enough listening for one night.....thanks all, some cool stuff here!!

Electric Six was pretty interesting, I should explore some more.
My personal favourite of bands that debuted after 2000 and are not prog is Everything Everything. It's not particularly rocking, but rock is probably the best fit for their general approach. But you HAVE to ignore their vocals to get into them, unless, that is, you do like that style of singing. Both of their albums, 'Man Alive' and 'Arc', are very interesting.

Kinda surprised to see that Tame Impala hasn't been mentioned yet. One of my absolute favourite modern rock bands. Think Beatles meets Dungen and you're not that far off. Both of their albums are brilliant, and I can never decide which one I love the most.
If you follow this link, you'll find both albums in their entirety

Janelle Monae's new album is weird sci-fi concept album motown pop. You might want to check that out.
EDIT: Whoops, not rock. You might not like it either. In that case, my consolation would be Dodos, particularly their 2010 album "No Color."

When I first got into TI I couldn't quite pinpoint which one of the Beatles the vocalist sounded the most like, and then it dawned on me, that he sounded like the perfect combo of Lennon and McCartney rolled up into one. Not a bad starting point one would imagine.
Also, Have you ever checked out Wolfmother Jim? Like TI they're also from down under, but whereas The Beatles fingerprint is all over the subdued gazelle, there's much more of a Led Zeppelin feel to these guys. I particularly enjoy their debut.

Even though they are listed here, I've never really considered Mew prog. Fantastic, fantastic band (especially their albums 'Frengers' and '...And The Glass Handed Kites'). One of my all time favorites because of those two albums, for sure, their sound is very special to me.
That aside, they don't really qualify for this topic as they formed in the late 90s, not post-2000 (even though they didn't hit it big until post-2000)

Iceage, a punk band from my home country strongly inspired by The Fall, Killing Joke, Wire and the 1980s noise rock groups KJ helped kickoff. There's few surer marks of quality than http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2013/feb/22/iceage-rightwing-accusations" rel="nofollow - a band with at least one obviously Jewish key member being accused of harbouring Neo-Nazi sympathies ... just ask Blue Öyster Cult and Type O Negative.

20 year old Jesse Kinch: singer, songwriter, guitarist, lyricist. Jesse has been playing the N.Y.C./Long Island club scene since the age of 8. He is a part of a new generation of young talent who want to bring rock n’ roll back to its glory days! Influenced heavily by the great rock bands and guitarists of the 60’s, 70’s and the Seattle scene of the 90’s, Jesse delivers high energy performances and writes songs that capture the times with his own unique original style. He performed at a N.Y. rock club at age 7 with an all adult band backing him. At age 8, Jesse was featured on TV News Channel 12, Long Island. At 10, Jesse was invited to the Sam Ash Guitar Competition where he finished third competing with performers 2 to 3 times his age.Jesse has become a member of legendary photographer Robert Knight's "Brotherhood Of The Guitar"
