Death by 1000 miles. They popularized death metal so we can talk about it now.

Chuck Schuldiner was an absolute hero of heavy metal.  Opeth is pretty good.

I'd still rather listen to Opeth.

I can't vote. Way too different and love 'em both.

Not a huge fan of either but if I were forced at gunpoint I would choose Death (ha! get it?)

How come these polls rarely have 'none of the above'?

It's assumed that if one doesn't like either of the bands, one would simply refrain from participating...or commenting.

Opeth because the perform more melodic prog tunes as well as the metal.

Opeth is the more developed metal sound, and more melodic. Still Life is the only Death Metal album that I'd give 4/5 stars to, and the only one I've really considered buying Ermm

Death had better guitarists than Opeth. Opeth is not even close.

Wasn't talking about that so much as posting stuff like that isn't going to make anyone change or regret their vote. =P

And Chuck, Masdival, LaRouque etc. played a very different style of death metal in Death than Akerfeldt and Lindgren in Opeth. I don't think Chuck could have written an Opeth song, and Akerfeldt couldn't have written a Death song. If that makes sense. LOL

Andy LaRocque was widely known as King Diamond guitarist, his style definitely developed to the point of extreme. Opeth were just kids playing metal.

And Death started as a thrash-y and punk-y band with unique-at-the-time vocals. Both kept improving and drawing influences from other genres and are far more refined than when they started.

Also, wrong guitarist! Meant Rick Rozz. Embarrassed

Not wrong, Andy played on Individual Thought Patterns and brought his unique style that pushed Death forward. Opeth were later and they actually didn't show anything new at the time they started.

I think folk was fairly new to death metal at the time. It had probably been done in black metal by then, though, so yeah. Nothing new when they started.

Bathory released Twilight Of The Gods in 1991 4 years before Opeth debut album.

Well, there you go. LOL
Still--you can't judge a band by its first album (at least, not ones with over a decade of music). I wouldn't be a Death fan if I did that.

I've heard their first 4 albums. Nothing interesting to me. It's not like you record a long song and it's always good.

You haven't heard anything from Blackwater Park on?

^ No, in fact when they started (released their debut) I wasn't a big death metal fan anymore but my friend still was so indtroduced this band to me. In early 2000's I wasn't into metal at all. And Death....well, in 1990 they appeared to be fresh. I'm sentimental.

There probably isn't a metal guitarist on the planet who would claim that Opeth's guitarists were better than Death's... Opeth's guitarists included.

And I don't think many people are fatheaded enough to claim that they're better than those that influenced them.

Steve Vai is a better guitarist than Angus & Malcolm combined. I'd still rather listen to AC/DC though.

The Beatles were pretty average musicians even by the standards of their day, and look at the love they get. It's not always about how good you are, musicianship-wise.

I have to emphatically agree. I can't force you to do anything, of course, but I must emphatically insist you listen to Ghost Reveries. The ratings do not do it justice; it is the tech/extreme prog metal masterpiece if I could only pick one. It's literally flawless and one of the most musical albums I've ever heard. Opeth's first 4 include Still Life, which I think is almost on par with Ghost Reveries, but good gravy do the early entries of their discographies not cover the whole story!

It's not a good example cos Death were first. Death were more influential than Opeth. But I see what you mean, it's still pretty subjective.

It's not a good example because Vai's playing is tasteless, uninspired and masturbatory

Nothing more horribly annoying than when someone makes a poll to just hate on one particular artist. Long live Opeth, Death is amazing as well.
