A new Deluge Grander album is due out February 5th! This looks pretty damn cool. I'm also psyched because the new line-up is a 6 piece that includes Cliff Phelps and Pat Gaffney from Chaos Code, a very cool little prog band from a few years back. The item is truly special. Handmade album sleeve holds both CD and Vinyl. Only 205 copies are available, each numbered, each featured completely individual artworks and handwritten lyrics. Did someone say `vinyl'?!  No, actually Jim, I'm not quite the slavish vinyl junkie I once was, a nice mix of CD's and LP's throughout the year is fine with me! But,  , I'm actually interested to check out this band. If my memory is right, I was very impressed with them on the `Romantic Warriors' documentary, so I'd like to give them a shot! If anyone can suggest where to start with them even before this new one, please let me know!

Hi Michael, I'd start with this new one. Sounds very cool and I like the expanded line-up....and I guess I just have a hunch about it. Otherwise, check some reviews on the personalities of their first two....I think this is only the 3rd album. It's been a while since I've heard the other two. ------------- |

Both of their albums are pretty excellent. August In The Urals is more symphonic in tone as compared to The Form Of The Good seems to have a wider array of influences to my ears (still works well as a symph album though IMO). In case you missed..... Why not also release it on a regular CD in a jewel case and sell them for $12-15? A perfectly reasonable question. A release like this does indeed fail to satisfy someone who just wants a regular CD. I myself actually prefer regular CDs to expensive collectible vinyl LPs and electronic files. But as music is heard on the Internet more often, I think if you're going to release music in a physical format, maybe you should try to make that physical format as artistic and interesting as you can. This is one way to do that. Many people also like to have music on vinyl records, the containers of which are big enough to allow sizable, tangible artwork. Since roughly 2,000 people thought previous Deluge Grander albums were worth paying about $5-15 for in CD or electronic form, I'm hoping that maybe 100-200 will be willing to pay $38 for this handmade version, and that the rest will be content with the freely distributed video that contains all the music. Additionally, this release is the first of a planned seven-album series, the upper tiers of which will likely be released in less expensive CD formats, containing new pieces with some of the music on this release. I'm not sure if the whole series will actually be finished as planned; that depends mostly on how well things go with "Heliotians." ------------- |

I have a vague imression that they try to sell the package rather than the music. Quite a pity since their debut is a true masterpiece and their sophomore album is also good. -------------

Exactly what I think too.. But Dan Britton didn't disapointed me very often so I think it should be good. The new Birds and Buildings is quite stunning

He explained that the cost of the discs is neglible, about $2 each. So the cost is the packaging. So if he were offering only one format, the cost would only be $2 less. Like, vinyl alone would be $36 instead of $38. So he just decided to do both and figured the hard core fans would appreciate both. With regard to the music, I see no reason to suspect it would be of any less quality than previous releases. These guys and gals are very talented...they just wanted to do something unique and special with the packaging. They're having fun with the project.

I don't see how this sales strategy is going to hurt the actual product - maybe other than a few poor boys like myself probably won't have the dough to pay for it. I really dig how this album is described though and would love to get my hands on it at some point. What really struck me when i read about this release was, that all the musicians involved seem to be credited with vocals. February 5 is the "official release date," but some vendors will probably put up copies for sale before then. Wayside Music (which is based less than a mile from where I live) actually got their copies hand-delivered a few days ago, and they're already for sale there (though for $50):

Apparently with CDBaby, the page for an album is not visible until its release date. I was a bit surprised that's how they do it, but that seems to be the way it works. I guess they don't want to get involved with anything resembling a "pre-order" campaign for some reason. They do have copies in stock, but you'll just have to wait until February 5 to view the page to order them. ------------- www.emkog.com |

Currently listening to the album from Youtube... Still not quite sure if it's worth it, no matter how much I love the 2 other albums. Probably will wait till the next one (since they're planning 3 others). It's not captivating me, enveloping me with walls of sound like The Form of Good. Seems a bit rushed. Supposedly, it's "Atmospheric and Nappable" but I find Before the Common Era (intro to The Form of Good) reaching heights I'm not hearing in the first 14 minutes of Heliotians. I'll wait for Lunarians, being that it's "Intricate, Pastoral." I really wish this was a smash-hit, I've been a fan since August in the Urals first came out. Bantam to Behemoth blew me away from the first listen, and The Form of Good may very well be my favorite album from Dan.
