I have always prefered Firefly of the 3,seems a little more Lucifer's Friend influence is in there on some tracks.Innocent Victim & Fallen Angel have some moments too.Fallen Angel is the one i like the least.

I used to have Firefly and loved the track 'Rollin On'.
I also had FA just for the cover art !!
Now I only have their debut album - I guess the Heep don't do much for me.
Oh yeah, love Lucifer's Friend heaps though.

I really need an update on post '73 Heep releases. Love the first 6... tended to think the last two with Byron lacked inspiration, Wonderwall and Return to Fantasy were dull to me. The Lawton era never caught my imagination (Free Me....ok tune but not exactly Salisbury). And that one in 1980 I thought was god awful...  Renaissance time in the early 80s but I only managed a few listens to an album or two since then.

Back to topic

This might indicate any Lawton era releases to insert into listening to the usual suspects (Genesis in particular)...Wink

John Lawton, this is an interesting topic, David Byron to me was more and beyond one of the most incredible vocalists to date, I am not much impressed by singers, however he was and is one of the very few that I love. I have not kept up with everything going on with Uriah Heep, however I do know that John Lawton performed Salisbury live with his nemesis Ken Hensley and to date Salisbury was ever only performed live 3 times live thus wow!

I agree on David Byron being an incredible vocalist.A very underrated one unfortunately followed by an untimely death. What was the year of his death? Was it `83?I"ve been tying for years to get decent vinyl copies (without paying a fortune) of his solo effort's Baby Faced Killer and On The Rocks.I have Rough Diamond and Take No Prisoners. The Lawton era of Uriah Heep takes some getting used too,and as much as i like Uriah Heep there are many songs from that era i simply can't get into. It's my understanding that these albums did better in Europe than anywhere else. But in my opinion there are a few good songs to be found on them.I wouldn't recommend anyone rushing out and buying them though.I'm finding that this Heep era may not have much of a fan base on here, which is understandable.

They are in fact a reality. As they are in my LP collection. If you wanted to listen to any songs for curiosity sake i would suggest The Hangin' Tree,Sympathy & Been Away To Long from Firefly.I'm Alive and Put Your Lovin' On Me from Fallen Angel. On Innocent Victim i'd go with Choices,Free & Easy and maybe Illusion for a general impression of the music of that era of Heep. Actually some of the songs are not that bad....at all.

I have all the Heep Lp's up to and including Magicians Birthday.
I'll ck out some of those tracks.

'Firefly'. I quite love this LP despite it's surprisingly much less heavy than Byron-era stuff.

'Innocent Victim' had a couple of nice ideas but it was completely ruined by the plactic-sounding production.

'Fallen Angel' is a bit more interesting than 'Innocent Victim' because it at least has some catchy hooks, but it's also a very poppy album.

So actually Uriah Heep died for me after 'Firefly' and re-born only in 1995 with the killer album called 'Sea of Light'.

It was 1985, February 28.

I don't find its production plastic-sounding.
Actually I love "Innocent Victim", it was the first Heep record I've heard. "Free'n'Easy", "Illusion", "Free Me", "The Dance" and "Choices" are great songs. Though I voted for "Firefly" because as a whole it's a better album.

In 1982 Soviet "Melodyia" label released "Innocent Victim" LP entitled simply "Uriah Heep" (original image with a snake was kinda censored LOL)

I didn't know it's called "Innocent Victim" but liked it a lot. Soon, after many listens on a primitive mono turntable, my copy became quite noisy and I found a copy in a better condition, this time with another cover:

And I still didn't know it's "Innocent Victim" album, back then, in the 80s, it was not so easy to find info. After several years of ignorance one of my friends told, to my big surprise, that I don't need to search for "Innocent Victim" because it stands on a shelf in my room. Smile

^^Oh yeah - I forgot Trevor Bolder was in the band! What a goofy album cover. I always loved Lawton's voice, especially with Lucifer's Friend. Innocent Victim is the only Uriah Heep album I have with him on it. I go back to it once in a while for nostalgia, but it doesn't have a lot of solid lasting appeal to me.

As I said I was just being cantankerous...I've been playing the Heep since the first lp came out on vinyl. Still really like Gypsy Queen from the first. I still play Demons and Wizards, Salisbury, the first, and just picked up a used copy on cd of Look At Yourself.
Big smile  Hugs to you also......

I love all the three albums. I couldn't tell which is the most favourite of mine.

Obviously Firefly is highly regarded because is the most balanced between old and new Heep' sound.

On Innocent Victim there are some of the band's most overlooked gems: Illusion, The Dance and Choices.

Fallen Angel is also recommendable for Woman of the Night, I'm Alive and the closer. Above all the wonderful Come Back to Me, penned by Kerslake.

Well-looks like i'm not alone as a fan of these Albums.Fallen Angel is by far my least favorite, but as pointed out some great tracks to be found there as well

I also enjoy Lucifer's Friend, and Lawton's addition to the Heep fold was a genius move, IMO. Firefly is outstanding and they didn't quite match it with the next two.

I also like Rebel with Lawton. The guy's an amazing singer.

Hi,

I interviewed John Lawton for my blog. Yeah that's a strong number a la Easy Livin'.

The whole Innocent Victim is better than most people think. I like the spacey key sound in songs as Illusion and Choises.

Very interesting interview-thanks for sharing! The only Lucifer's Friend i have is the debut & it's a great album for sure.I've been tempted to buy Banquet & give it listen.
There are some great songs to be found on Firefly,Innocent Victim & Fallen Angel that is a fact.I have all 3 in my vinyl collection.

First off, thank you, for the kind remarks on my John Lawton interview. Yes, as I said in the interview, Lucifer's friend is a challenging band  to get into because the band kept changing styles on each album.  My favs are the first album for that heavy Sabbath/Purple/Heep sound and Banquet, as the best of the progressive stuff from Lucifier's Friend.

Though I expected you repost the whole text and pictures with the link to the source. Kind of:

- The thread title: John Lawton (ex-LUCIFER'S FRIEND, ex-URIAH HEEP).
- The whole interview.
- Links to; the interview in your blog, LF and UH pages on PA, John Lawton official website.

The same in case of Sonja Kristina.

An example how interviews are usually presented in the forum: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=74726" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=74726

I am very new to this thing, sorry, so bear with me.  I'll be doing future prog interviews, I work with the same publicist  who did John Lawton and Sonja Kristina, and he represents other prog legends as Jon Anderson and Greg Lake. Going forward, I'll do this prog archives similar to how it is done.
