Hey, just wanted to see everyone's favourite to least favourite Genesis (studio) albums. It's probably been done on PA some time but can't find it, so I'd like to what yours are! Big smile If you haven't heard all of them, just list the ones you have. Anyway, mine are:

1. Trespass (10/10)
2. Foxtrot (10/10)
3. Selling England By The Pound (10/10)
4. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (10/10)
5. From Genesis To Revelation (10/10 - yes really!)
6. Nursery Cryme (9/10)
7. Duke (9/10)
8. A Trick Of The Tail (8/10)
9. Wind And Wuthering (8/10)
10. And Then There Were Three (8/10)
11. Invisible Touch (7/10)
12. We Can't Dance (6/10)
13. Genesis (6/10)

Well, this has been done something like a whole load of times (the search thing is crap!), but a Genesis list is always worth responding toSmile

1. Nursery Cryme. The archetypal English prog album
2. Duke. The archetypal prog pop rock album
3. Foxtrot. The realisation of a musical dream and genius on record. Stratton Smith adored it, for good reason.
4. Selling England. The achingly gorgeous paeon to a soon to be lost England.
5. Trick of the Tail. Finest recovery from disaster of all time,
6. Trespass. They were kids, for f**ks sake. just kids. Incredible, really.
7. Wind & Wuthering. That wall of sound. It moves me enormously to this day.
8. Abacab. There are some deliciously dark moments on this.
9. The Lamb. Flawed genius, but genius nonetheless.
10. ATTWT. That wall of sound. Expanded, with one person removed. Far better than most people state.
11. We Can't Dance. Fading Lights, No Son of Mine, need I say more? Some exceptional music on this.
12.  Invisible Touch. Domino and Brazilian especially, with some very clever pop rock.
13.  Calling All Stations. I really wish Banks and Rutherford had stuck with this. Far better than merely a one album lineup.
14. Genesis. Great first side. Probably the worst second side in prog history.
15. To Revelation. It shows its age and immaturity. Bags of potential, thoughLOL

Genesis' albums? From best to worst? ...okay, I think I can do this!

1: Genesis (Surprised?)
2: Selling England By The Pound (Genesis (album) just beats this album by a super-tiny margin)
3: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (Peter Gabriel leaves Genesis with a bang and gives us the best concept album ever)
4: Foxtrot (Best opening song and ending song by Genesis is on this album)
5: A Trick Of The Tail (Gabriel or no Gabriel, this album is still a masterpiece)
6: Nursery Cryme (The Musical Box, The Return Of The Giant Hogsweed AND The Fountain Of Salmacis all on one album?! I'm sold)
7: Abacab (Experimental synthpop mixed with pseudoprog elements? I can go with this. And the result is amazing)
8: And Then There Were Three (Very underrated. Deserves much better. So much better than that nauseating synthfest that was the previous album and we get to that album later)
9: Invisible Touch (Excellent songs mixed in with some crap)
10: Duke (And suddenly Genesis turns into pseudoprog. And it's okay. Very close to being great)
11: From Genesis To Revelation (Terrible production but the songs? Pop perfection)
12: We Can't Dance (First four songs are excellent. The others are utter garbage)
13: Trespass (For the most part, boring as all hell. The Knife saves the album, though)
14: Wind & Wuthering (50 minutes of nauseating Banksynths and terrible, terrible songs)
15: Calling All Stations (What the hell is THIS sh*t? Cosmic rock lullabys? Is this even supposed to be music?)

For Me:
Trick
The Lamb
Selling England
Nursery
Foxtrot
Wind
Duke
Trespass
Calling
Genesis
Invisible
We Can't Dance
Abacab
And Then There Were Three

I can say for my list I think Trick through Foxtrot, those lp's are flawless. Wind is pretty close to flawless, maybe a little lyrical weakness on Mouses night but the music is great. Duke is really superb. As for the rest I like them all but they have their weaker moments but great upsides as well, The Knife, Domino, Home by the Sea, Driving the Last Spike, Dividing Line, Fading Lights... IMHO they really only have two awful songs, I Can't Dance and Who Dunnit. I put Abacab and Then Then There Were Three at the bottom because they missed that one thing that made Genesis great, a proggy song of length. I omitted Revelations because I have not heard it in years, having said that I know I liked it and it was certainly different from the sound they eventually came up with!

I didn't care for Genesis once Tony, Phil, and Mike gave into commercialism, so I don't count their endeavors as part of the progressive rock continuum. This said, I love Nursery Cryme through Wind & Wuthering and it would be foolish of me to even try and put them in any kind of favorite order.

EVERYTHING from Nursery Cryme through Wind & Wuthering. Now the tricky part of all of this is trying to get these albums into some kind of order...

This may take me awhile. Big smile

It was made by a bunch of snotty nosed, spotty school kids. A bunch of snotty nosed, spotty, English public school kids, at that.

They made an album of Bee Gee sounding pop rock songs to impress school old boy Jonathan King, who had had a massive hit record.

To Revelation was really no more than that.

Not sure I've done this before.  But I generally like all the Genesis albums so this may be tough

1. Lamb
2. Selling England
3. Foxtrot
4. Trespass
5. Trick
6. Abacab
7. And Then There...
8. Genesis
9. Duke
10. Nursery
11. Wind
12. Invisible
13. FGTR
14. We Can't Dance
15. Calling

The ones on the bottom half of the list are still good albums (with the exception of maybe Calling, but even that is growing on me), but they rank lower because they contain a higher % of songs that I'm not particularly excited about.  Wind and Wuthering, for example:  I love the first track and the last three - but everything in between is stuff I often skip over.  And as for "And Then There Were Three", my favorite songs on that one are among my all time favorite Genesis tracks... but the others are just okay.

Just pre-empting against any "No Love for ____?" claims.  They're Genesis, and I love them.

That's the problem with ratings here. 10/10 For their debut? So you would give it 5 stars and call it an essential prog masterpiece because you think a forgettable, lame album deserves a bit more credit?

Let's be realistic here..

probably the closest to my own rankings. I find SEBTP and Lamb the hardest to rate as they have some of the very best Genesis music but also stuff I really don't care for. ATOTT and Foxtrot are the two Genesis I absolutely love and I would probably rate them that way round as well.

Nursery Cryme (8.5/10)
Selling England by the Pound (8.25/10)

Wind and Wuthering (not sure yet)
Genesis (haven't listened to it enough time to say but I liked it okay)

I once read something that echoed my sentiments exactly, to the effect that once Gabe left the band the world began to loose a world-class drummer and gained just another piano balladeer, so I can't shake off the contempt for all post-Gabriel Genesis. That being said...

Nursery Cryme - To me a unique musical adventure whose flaws actually add to the aesthetic.
Trespass - This album also carries the unique style that actually seemed to fade with every successive ensuing release.
Foxtrot - Sure, the band's highly polished at this point and all these listed deserve the highest marks, yet it seems the more capable the musicianship the further away the essence, the faery tale style of true Genesis slips.
Lamb - Brian Eno is a rare genius and his small contributions to this album makes for goose bumps!
Selling England - If it's their weakest album before the split this still doesn't mean it's essential for any true Prog audiophile.
...and I've sampled FGTR and would lump it with Triumvirate and Gentle Giant's last albums altho this was their first and rather than selling out I guess they were sellin in!

Below my combination. Not entirely complete, I think I need to perform some re-listenings, but I'm sure nothing will much affect the leading titles:

Foxtrot
Wind and Wuthering
A trick of the Tail
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Selling England by the Pound
Trespass
Nursery Cryme

Genesis
Invisible Touch
We Can't Dance

Ratings are generally rounded up.

1. Selling England By The Pound (10/10)
2. Nursery Cryme (10/10)
3. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (10/10)
4. A Trick Of The Tail (10/10)
5. Foxtrot (10/10)
6. Trespass (10/10)
7. Wind And Wuthering (10/10)
8. Invisible Touch (9/10) - the pinacle of their post Hacket work for me. I really enjoyed Domino lately.
9. From Genesis To Revelation (8/10) - It's a really fun album actually. Some of it is so pretentious that it sounds sarcastic but I don't think it is.
10. We Can't Dance (8/10) - overlong but some really good songs on here.
11. Duke (8/10) - The Duke Suite is really good. The rest is a little unfitting but I can enjoy it.
12. And Then There Were Three (7/10) - sounds really muddled at times. Not very striking in general but not really bad either.
13. Genesis (7/10) - The first side is amazing, the second side isn't good.
14. Abacab (6/10) - Maybe I should give this a second chance. At first I only could listen to the title track, it's gotten better since then.
15. Calling All Stations (3/10) - I like Shipwrecked and the title track but the rest really is crap.

I prefer the Gabriel Genesis but am no fan of the Lamb - sprawling, no true center....and what the frag does Gabriel know about "tough kids" and life "in the street".  Wish they'd stuck to English pastoral instead of urban decay.  Not bad music, especially sides 1 and 2, but the rehashing of themes throughout the second half really drags the atmosphere down.  Where's the denoumont?  Where's the wrapping up?  Rael suddenly reaches realization with "It"?  No, no, no....Gabriel had a great idea that he rushed thru while the band holed up and became the post-Gabriel band we know and love.

Post-Gabriel:

Wind>ATTWT>Trick

Post-Hackett:

^ Where does Trespass stand on your list?

Posted By: Intruder
Date Posted: November 10 2014 at 13:11

To me, Trespass is the "missing" Genesis album.  There's a great leap forward from GtR but they're still searching for a sound.  It's an album I don't return to very often, but when I do I find it relaxing but subdued....maybe due to the shyte recording.  In general, all the early Gensis albums suffer from poor production.

I find it well below the Lamb but still listenable.....though I dig Ant Phillips, I see why they needed to bring in Steve.  More powerful playing, more nuanced, more technical.

I listen to Trespass more often than The Lamb (I just did yesterday): it's painful to listen to the whole double album. Yes, the production is weak and there's still not much maturity in their composition, but there are some great moments on that one.

1. Foxtrot - Quality at its most English.
2. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - A varied onslaught of radical ideas saved until the end as Gabriel's opus.
3. A Trick of the Tail - A phoenix reborn. Sing on, oh drumming wonder, sing on!
4. Selling England By the Pound - Pretty but staid. Still, wonderful Gabriel vocals.
6. Nursery Cryme - Fine ensemble playing with the two new guys.
7. Genesis Live - A fine representation of the band live.
8. Wind and Wuthering - Great melodies in the shadow of dissension and despair.
9. And Then There Were Three - Sullen prog in attempting to cover for the departed.
10. Duke - Fondly known across the frozen tundra as "Puke."

Not exactly answering the notion of the thread, but it kept me from work for awhile.

Not totally surprising I suppose . The top two are my top two as well. The low ranking albums are mostly the pop based albums including the debut. Duke is the last link with their early classic albums before the 'pop era'.

I cant do this properly ..

I think Selling England is my favourite - but somedays it can be Lamb.
All the rest up to Trick of the tail are pretty much even to me depending on mood again.

the last three would be trick of the tail
and then there were three
wind and wuthering

in that order.

the rest - I personally cant find anything to like at all so they all tie for last.

1 Selling England By The Pound (10/10) I absolutely adore this album, what gives it it's edge is the Cinema Show solo.
Dancing With The Moonlit Knight 9.3
I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) 8.6
Firth Of Fifth 9.8
More Fool Me 8.2
The Battle Of Epping Forest 9.1
After The Ordeal 8.4
The Cinema Show 9.6
Aisle Of Plenty 8.8

2 Foxtrot (10/10) Supper's Ready is my all time favorite song, heck, it might even be the best.
Watcher Of The Skies 9.2
Time Table 8.5
Get 'em Out By Friday 8.7
Horizons 8.1
Can-Utility And The Coastliners 8.3
Supper's Ready 10

3 The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (9/10) I love this album, but it gets a little spotty with songs like The Grand Parade Of Lifeless Packaging, The Waiting Room and Silent Sorrow In Empty Boats but the better songs are absolutely amazing.
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 8.9
Fly on a Windshield 9
Broadway Melody of 1974 8.7
Cuckoo Cocoon 8.6
In the Cage 9.4
The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging 7.1
Back in N.Y.C. 8.5
Hairless Heart 8.1
Counting Out Time 7.9
Carpet Crawlers 9.2
The Chamber of 32 Doors 8.9
Lilywhite Lilith 8.8
The Waiting Room 6.7
Anyway 9
Here Comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist 8.7
The Lamia 9.1
Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats 7.2
The Colony of Slippermen: Arrival / A Visit to the Doktor / Raven 8
Ravine 7.9
The Light Dies Down on Broadway 8.6
Riding the Scree 8.4
In the Rapids 8.6
It. 8.5

4 A Trick Of The Tail (9/10) Great album, the songs are great, all of them are, but the thing that edged out The Lamb is that the great songs on that album are better than the ones on this one.
Dance On A Volcano 8.9
Entangled 8.6
Squonk 8.4
Mad Man Moon 8.8
Robbery, Assault And Battery 8.7
Ripples 8.5
A Trick Of The Tail 8.6
Los Endos 8.5

5 Wind And Wuthering (9/10) Some of Tony Banks' best work is on this album, the songs are very good (especially the first two).
Eleventh Earl Of Mar 8.9
One For The Vine 9
Your Own Special Way 8.3
Wot Gorilla? 8.6
All In A Mouse's Night 8.7
Blood On The Rooftops 8.8
'Unquiet Slumbers For Sleepers 8.2
...in That Quiet Earth 8.3
Afterglow 8.9

6 Nursery Cryme (9/10) This album is a significant album in Genesis' history, it was their best album to date, until next year's Foxtrot, and even though The Musical Box is an epic, Supper's Ready is much better.
The Musical Box 9.1
For Absent Friends 8.4
The Return Of The Giant Hogweed 8.5
Seven Stones 8.8
Harold The Barrel 8.7
Harlequin 8.5
The Fountain Of Salmacis 8.6

7 Trespass(8/10) Some great songs on there, shows a lot of promise, but not quite as good as Nursery Cryme.
Looking For Someone 8.4
White Mountain 8.5
Visions Of Angels 8.7
Stagnation 8.3
Dusk 8.4
The Knife 8.9

I don't know much about the other albums, some parts of this list may not be 100% accurate, there might be some songs I like better than others that I listed the other way around, anyway, this is just my opinion about Genesis, my favorite band.

For me impossible to rate 1 - 15 but generally speaking .....

Essential - some of my all time favourite albums.
Foxtrot (Simply gorgeous)
Selling England By The Pound (First Genesis album I heard. Went back and bought Foxtrot and Trespass the following week. Very few albums are as important to me.)
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (As everyone says a flawed masterpiece. Would probably have made a stunner of a single CD. Still effing wonderful.)
A Trick Of The Tail (Who'd have thunk it possible ?)
Wind And Wuthering (Peter who ?)
Duke (There is hope after the disappointing ATTWT, alas it was nowt but hope. )

Non essential but but but .....
Nursery Cryme (very nearly made the cut, someone had to lose out, for the time some great stuff)
And Then There Were Three (like it but for mine, absolutely ruined by Follow You Follow Me which on the original LP sounds like an unloved orphan looking for a home .... and not really succeeding.)

Of historical interest only .....
From Genesis To Revelation
Trespass

Irrelevent (They all have the odd highlight but long term a yawn fest)
Abacab (nice enough, liked it when first released but it hasn't stood the test of time, prog very vaguely related at best.)
Genesis (nothing that hadn't been said before, overall drear. )
Invisible Touch (By this stage Domino comes as something of a surprise, that's about it.)
We Can't Dance (Oh please.)

Jury still out but bordering on irrelevence.
Calling All Stations (Like a lot of Genesis late era, I'm not at all sure it belongs in Prog at all but it's a more interesting album that I first gave it it credit for.)

Hard to say really. By that stage Genesis only had two of its original members though that is at least more than some groups can claim.

I only gave CAS a couple of listens when it first came out then filed it under irrelevent. Wilson didn't do much for me I confess, indeed I've long been a big admirer of Paul Carrack and wondered why they didn't go for him as Collins replacement. That said I did give CAS another listen recently and was reasonably impressed. Maybe they should have given it one more shot even though it would never have been as big as any Collins era album. So what I say. Not as if the buggers need the loot even though one suspects that is the only reason they are/were still in the game.

Just giving CAS another hearing. OK, so its a quite good pop/rock album with some nice keyboards and vocals but that's about it. Might as well be a Mike and the Mechanics album. Which is not necessarily a bad thing but it's not Genesis.

One must also wonder why after losing Collins, Banks and Rutherford didn't make Stuermer and Thompson permanent members. At least it might have given the band a bit more continuity. It all smacks of control freakiness and/or money obsession.

I really can't pick between Foxtrot and SEBTP. The first has Supper's Ready, but the second one feels more solid overall. Very hard.

1-Foxtrot 10/10. Has one of my favorite pieces of music of all time that I absolutely love.
2-Selling England by the Pound 10/10. Perfect album.
3-Nursery Crime 9/10. Some gems but there's "something" missing for it to be perfect.
4-A Trick of the Taill 9/10. Their last true amazing album.
5-The Lamb Lies down on Broadway 9/10. Some fillers but some magic in it too.
6-Trespass 8/10. Where it all really started Clap
7-And Then There Were Three 8/10. Really like this one. Very underrated
8-Genesis 7/10. Their best in the pop era.
9-Invisible Touch 7/10. Pretty close to Genesis
10 Wind & Wuthering 7/10. Their least interesting of the prog era.
11-From Genesis to Revelation 6/10. Some catchy songs.
12-Duke 6/10. Ok album but nothing that stands out.
13-Abacab 6/10. Same.
14-We Can't Dance 6/10. And same
15-Calling All Stations 5/10. Aside from Congo and Shipwrecked it's poor

Respect your opinion, Lion', but don't hold with all of it. To put Wind and Wuthering, a bravura epic (sans Your Own Special Way) and Hackett's swan song, so far down the list (edged out by Invisible Touch?) before relegating Duke and Abacab to the status of "Ok" with both sitting just above (gasp) We Can't Dance kind of negates your deft critique of the first six items on the list.
