All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Hi,

Sad bunch of posts, that shows how much we DON'T listen to other musics and how people use an electric guitar.  There is so much more music out there and guitar work, that is exceptional, that no one will give it a shot or chance.

As a protest, I won't bother listing mine!

I've never met a person who doesn't admire Gilmour's guitaring . I've met plenty who don't know who Gilmour's is , but those who do, love his style.
Phil Mercy (Thieves' Kitchen) and Chris Fry (Magenta) need mentions.....

Speak for yourself. As an avid fan of classical, jazz, AND progressive rock, I couldn't help but laugh at your post. This thread was created to post about YOUR FAVORITE guitarist and whether one is being all-inclusive or they're simply sticking to progressive rock or jazz fusion guitarists doesn't mean that these people don't know about other music and the guitarists that play this other music.

Leave a list, don't leave a list, that's your prerogative, but don't include anyone else in your post and just worry about your own likes and dislikes. You certainly speak for no one but yourself.

Yes, the original poster asked for our 10 favorite guitarists, not 10 we believed to be the greatest, most influential or most innovative. If that were the case, I would have offered a different set of guitarists. As for the favorites I listed, I could have easily added another 10 and been comfortable with all the choices.

But a thing I didn't do was disparage other people's choices, because that would be asinine.

Moshkito likes to throw his toys out of his pram occasionally. His post did make me think though and its interesting that no one has included Carlos Santana in their list.
I also find that there are a lot of guitarists that are part of bands that I simply don't know the names. For instance does anyone know the guitarist in Coheed and Cambria? Superb player but I've not got a clue who he is. At the end of the day its about enjoying music isn't it? and not about being able to post the perfect list showing what a clever or knowledgeable person you are. If it helps I don't make any claims on my behalf for eitherTongue

I used to listen to CoCa a few years back. He's good but guys like Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) and Adam Jones (TOOL) are better, IMO.

Bill Nelson is another that's been roundly overlooked. I love Be Bop Deluxe and he is that band pretty much. I think its a bit lazy to trot out the same old names and perhaps we've fallen into that trap all too easily.

"Crying to the Sky" is kinda essential listening.

Yep as I said in my post Marr is one of the few guitarists I care about. Lovely playing and a real star on The Smiths albums.

Edge is great too but much more inconsistent. Unforgettable Fire has been my favorite release of theirs and the title track has great playing.

Very much so, yes! I never get tired of hearing those parts. Not a boring or uninspired one in the bunch, and that Gilmour influence is so prevalent in each one. Props to him for making it not sound derivative, too!

I couldn't take it anymore, so I went ahead and corrected the thread title

10 guitarists you say?

John Weinzierl
Fripp
Michael Karoli
Michio Kurihara
David Gilmour
Conny Veit
Manuel Göttsching
Reine Fiske
Jimi
Eric Clapton ( Back when he was on special medicine )
Adrian Belew ( see Red Sails from Bowie's Lodger )

Whoops 11.
And I haven't even begun to list all the wonderful guitarists from places like Japan and Italy, but that's entirely because the names always end up all scrambled in my head, and then I have to do a search, and more things will follow, and right now I just want to remove my shoes because they're killing me.

10. Steve Lukather
9. Pat Martino
8. Paul Gilbert
7. Jeff Beck
6. Steve Morse
5. Gutherie Govan
4. Martin Taylor
3. Steve Vai
2. Brent Mason
1. Al di Meola

That's a quick ten. No room for Scofield, Holdsworth, Stern, Montgomery, Dominic Miller, Satch, Loureiro, or newbie Plini!

...but what do I know, I'm just a dumb drummer Wink

^^Hey Watcher of the Sky:-)

Nice list there.
One thing though, it's actually not Steven playing the solo on 'Drive Home', but rather new guitar prodigy Guthrie Govan;-) If you dig his style, then you can't really go wrong with his solo effort 'Erotic Cakes'.

Seriously? I really thought it was Steve there (Since he is the lead guitar in Porcupine Tree, as far as I know)

Anyway, thanks for correct that, and also the recommendation, going to check his work asap :D

Agreed. Goven could possibly be the best guitarist on the planet right now. Insane technique and mastery of many genres. Erotic Cakes was brilliant. I heard Guthrie and his composition "Fives" first on Lee Ritenour's 6-String Theory. Vinnie on drums and Tal on bass, providing the rhythm section. But, it blew my mind when I heard Gutherie's original version which I liked even better, with cats I was not even aware of on drums and bass. And his Rhode Island Shred is a quirky fun take on Steve Morse-type chicken pickin. What a romp!

Check out Plini's stuff too if you dig Goven. Similar, but with more of a steady electronic quality to it (perhaps because of the lack of drummer.)
