Hello guys, my nickname is Razors Edge (Razors, not Razor's!) and I am an Italian progressive rock "academic".  Being a perfectionist, i'll report the mistakes i'll find in the PA discographies. Moreover, i'd like share on and off with you all some reflections about the prog "matter". Here are my favourite artists (variations are possible) for each PA categories (calling "genres" is uncorrect, in my opinion; they are not definable like that): Canterbury Scene (a prog music movement, not a genre): Soft Machine Crossover Prog (a facticious prog category): Mike Oldfield Eclectic Prog (a facticious prog category): The Tangent Experimental/Post Metal (a prog music movement, not a genre): Tool Heavy Prog (a facticious prog category): The Mars Volta Indo-Prog/Raga Rock (a partially prog music movement, not a genre): Osjan Jazz Rock/Fusion (both a prog genre and a prog music movement): Miles Davis Krautrock (a prog music movement, not a genre): Popol Vuh Neo-Prog (a prog music movement, not a genre): Marillion Post-Rock/Math Rock (a prog music movement, not a genre): Sigur Rós Prog Folk (a facticious prog category; here the subject is complicated...): Jethro Tull Progressive Electronic (a facticious prog category): Tangerine Dream Progressive Metal (both a prog genre and a prog music movement): Dream Theater Psychedelic/Space Rock (a prog music movement, not a genre): Pink Floyd RIO/Avant-Prog (a prog music movement, not a genre): Frank Zappa Rock Progressivo Italiano (a facticious prog category): Banco del Mutuo Soccorso Symphonic Prog (both a prog genre and a prog music movement): Transatlantic Tech/Extreme Prog Metal (a prog music movement, not a genre): Opeth Zeuhl (a prog music movement, not a genre): Magma Prog Related (a facticious partially prog category) : Led Zeppelin Proto-Prog (a facticious partially prog category) : Deep Purple Nota Bene: The comments to every categories are not a criticism to Prog Archives, I respect the policy of the site. How do. Welcome to the site. It is spelt factitious, as in artificial and contrived. Whilst I happen to agree with you, by and large, this is a subject we have debated endlessly here, and I can state that this is not a subject which will win you any popularity contests here. Take some advice from one who knows!

Welcome, and thanks for the interesting notes. In my mind, all the above are movements rather than sub-genres but this is of little interest to the wider prog community. And yes, some of them are "factitious" as you call them or rather "conventions" to attempt and "categorise" the movements, so that if person X likes the style of band Y, then maybe he can find other bands under the same movement. Of course, none of the "sub-genres" are in isolation, but we are trying for the best fit. And of course, every help in spotting errors and omissions is more than welcome  |
