That is an amazing tune, Svetonio. One of his best. Although I don't  find the rest of the album equally engaging.

This one is also great.

Only have a couple in this time period, but one I really like is Oscar Peterson and Milt Jackson - Very Tall album (1961).  Milt and his vibraphone really blend well with Peterson's trio.

Seeing this poll and the previous, mentioned was Sun Ra, I am amazed that I have not heard of him until these polls.  Somehow I overlooked him, from what I have been reading and samples heard, I have to get some his stuff.  Any suggestions on where to start with him?

Not easy to reccomend a starting point sa he was active in four decades releasing far out free jazz, space funk, fusion, exotica, trad. jazz etc...

I'd say the one in this poll is a perfect place (but Man With Hat would probably disagree?). Get the one with the epic bonus.

...my second favorite Magic City is far out and free but a real trip, while still not as abstract as Heliocentric I & II.

If Sun Ra is going to keep appearing on these polls my choices are going to be easy. Secrets Of The Sun for me...but I also really like Time Further Out and The World Of Cecil Taylor.

This is indeed a difficult suggestion. However, probably the easiest thing to do is ease into his discog with his easier to listen stuff first. (Unless you like totally out there music/free jazz.)

From most "normal" to less "normal" (but still not too crazed):

Jazz In Silhouette
Sound Of Joy
Supersonic Jazz
The Futuristic Sounds Of Sun Ra
Angels & Demons At Play/The Nubians Of Plutonia
Fate In A Pleasant Mood/When Sun Comes Out
Strange Celestial Road

Secrets Of The Sun isn't a bad one either...it's very Ra without getting too far out there (comparatively).

If you want something more out there I highly recommend Atlantis, Space Is The Place, and The Magic City.

otherwise:

Max Roach - We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite
Eric Dolphy - At the Five Spot, Vol. 1 (probably my favourite Dolphy as leader record)
Booker Little - Out Front
Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth
The Joe Harriott Quintet - Abstract
Max Roach and His Chorus and Orchestra - It's Time

Forgot that one. Looked at the live recording from Belgian TV over and over just a couple of monts ago (kind of prefer those versions to the actual album).

Don't know the others. Will check them out.

OK, I dove in last night and got "Secrets of the Sun" which included The Flight to Mars track.  Nicely insane!  Sounds to be a little in the middle of traditional and free.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I guess I am on my way to the sun...

is this, perchance, available on youtube? the sheer power of a song like 'driver man' would be stunning in the live environment.

likewise, these polls are reminding me of how patchy my Jazz collection is.

Indeed! Easy to find. I've given up trying to post videos here but its amazing. It has such an emotional impact on me. Her screaming at the end leaves me in tears every time. The sound, the filming and performance is all outstanding.  I'm thrilled on your behalf.

Other - Miles at the Black hawk, both. There's always Carnegie Hall with Gil Evans (which is fine - I just prefer the smaller ensemble).
