I wasn't really sure where to post this. Anyway, I'm wondering if someone could tell me a bit about Spotify. Is it similar to youtube? Do you pay monthly or per song or is is it free etc. Also, does it take a long time to set up. I've never used it so I'm wondering and thinking about checking it out. Thanks.

It's free, but you get certain perks for paying. Set up is real quick, or non existent if you want to use it through your browser.

The free version has ads from time to time but you can mute on the browser version without stopping the ad. On the Android free version you can only listen albums on shuffle, so I uninstalled it.

Ok so then I take it that it's similar to youtube but without the videos then. I mean you can't download any of the music right?

Yeah, the music isn't downloadable. The artist gets a very very small cut with each play or something like that.

You can download with the paid version but you have to use their app to play the tracks. I've been a paid member for a couple years now and use it every day on my phone and laptop.

It's like any other radio service, i.e. compared to traditional radio it has the single advantage of letting you skip tracks a certain number of times in a certain time interval.

It's not really a radio service. I used the paid version (£9.99 per month) and I think it's really good, There is a lot of prog on there if you look around, I've already discovered some great bands such as Balloon Astronomy.

You can mark tracks as available offline but they are stored in a proprietary format so yes, you have to use the Spotify app to play them. There is a limit on the number of tracks you can store offline, I think it's 3000.

And of course the sound quality is excellent compared to youtube.

It's not exactly a radio service, but it's based on that concept. The music picks are determined by the user, so the tracks played are account-specific.

Note that scrobbling doesn't work on the browser version.

I have the paid version, and use the app quite a lot on my iPhone & iPad. I like to listen to an album before actually buying it and definitely prefer Spotify over YouTube. At least the artists get some compensation for the plays, although it is very minimal.

You're ok then. Apparently there is a bug in the browser version (I'm assuming it hasn't been fixed yet, it wasn't last time I checked but there's been a couple of updates since) that stop scrobbling working. That's why I use the thick client version.
