Any ideas? Thought I should get something different for a 100th album - maybe more esoteric or something big I've missed out on. Oh I see you like Swans.  I didn't look at it very carefully but it seems you have no Zeuhl on your list.  So the first I'm thinking about is Magma.

If you want something truly esoteric (and fairly deranged) and aren't afraid to jump right in the untested waters, might I suggest either MDK or K.A. by Magma. Ya could actually test the waters as I'm sure there be samples about here. Or, if that's not your thing, you can't go wrong by expanding your Gentle Giant collection. I'd go with either Free Hand, In a Glass House, or Octopus. And what are you talking about Horizons, about getting more modern prog in there. He has Presto. What more does he need? Actually, Gazpacho isn't a bad idea (their latest Demon is pretty darn cool). ------------- I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you? |

Thanks for all the suggestions, some pretty good ones in here I've forgotten about (The Strawbs, Comus, Colosseum, for example) which I'll probably give another listen. Never been a fan of Zeuhl or jazz rock (except from Colosseum for some reason). Been thinking about Gentle Giant (listened to Free Hand a couple of days ago), but "The Power And The Glory" is the only one that strikes a real chord with me. For GG, there's an obvious thread of progression throughout their albums (for me at least), and "In A Glass House" is a bit too unexciting, and "Free Hand" has sort of lost the melodies and power, but is otherwise better written. Some more thoughts I had included "Valtari" (nod to Horizons there), "Field Day" which I'm told is great but don't want to be too disappointed, "At The Sound Of The Bell" (leading at the moment), "Invisible Touch", Peter Gabriel's "Melt" (also pretty high up there), and King Crimson's "Beat" among others. Again, thanks for all the feedback guys!!

if you haven't done your favorite prog album of all time, you should do that!! OR, do another one of the top 10 PA albums or something. but especially the former choice.

Heh Counterparts is better than that by miles, so might as well stretch the date limit a bit.  And yes, i agree. Demon is very interesting. Scandinavian textures and atmospheres throughout the album really give it a unique sound. It isn't their strongest release, The Wizard could be thrown away and possibly not even replaced and it would be a more enjoyable album, but still an album without any reason to be disappointed. ------------- Crushed like a rose in the riverflow. |
