Zappa Vs. Floyd was easy. Now it's a heavyweight fight. Who do you prefer: Yes or Genesis?

Best album ever: Yes. Second and third best: Genesis.
Best discography of these two bands: Genesis.

So I vote for Genesis.

Yes at their best was far better than Genesis.
Both deteriorated, but Yes never sank as low as Genesis.

I didn't listen to a lot of late music of both artists but it seems Genesis is "less worse" than Yes. But I need more time to decide between their best albums. Difficult choice.

Just going by the 70’s material, for me, musically they are on par.  What would edge Yes to the forefront would be the lyrics.  And why can’t I vote?

More popular, probably Genesis.

My favorite? Definitely Genesis.

I've avoided this poll for a bit i think so i'll contribute this time.

Genesis easily. I prefer pop Genesis over prog Yes anyday anyway. Long live Gabriel!!!!! xoxoxox

The pool question says, "who is more popular, Yes or Genesis"?
And yet i can see tht most people (including me) stated their favourite/preference...
I feel the pool question/options..either of the two could hav been more specific...

Up to 1978 it would probably be Yes in a landslide, in regards to "popularity". Thereafter, the record sales would indicate Genesis as being more popular.

Thanks for the answer…  In the 70’s I think Yes was more popular than Genesis.  In the 80’s Genesis popularity started taking off and surpassed Yes by a mile.

My answer lies in my avatar. Over all Genesis are more popular than YES so it doesn't surprise me Genesis would have more votes. In the US at least YES are probably bigger as a prog band where as Genesis were bigger as a pop band.

Did I answer this kind of poll before?Ermm, but no problem I will do the same again...GENESIS

I think that Genesis is more in the tendence "virtuosity on the service of the musical piece" and Yes a bit the opossite, and personally I prefer the first case. I can see this mainly in Banks and Hackett more than Howe for example (who seems to use sometimes the musical piece as a vehicle for his virtuosity). Not that it is better, just different and more on my tastes.

Including the option of voting for one as a favorite or less favorite is not going to account for the unclarity of the last poll, my friend.
There are again two questions here: Which is favored by the individual reader and which is more popular. My favorite is Yes, but it is apparent to me that Genesis is more popular on this site. I could vote for all five options, which is not allowed. Thus, I vote not at all.

Genesis no question about it. I do like several Yes albums, but they're not as consistent as Genesis IMHO. Like someone else here wrote, I believe that the musicians in Genesis namely Banks and Hackett played for the song and not their egos. I don't always get this feeling from say Howe or Wakeman. They were both great and influential bands make no mistake about it, but Genesis move me more and will always mean more to me, so they get my vote.

Genesis were consistent up until and including Duke. After that not so much. Imo, YES were consistent until Union. So that's about a decade longer for YES. YES wins!

Posted By: AtomicCrimsonRush

Genesis up until Duke were the mainstayers for me. Yes is my choice after that album due to the  appalling next swag of Genesis albums. Abacab, Invisible Touch and the last one are nauseating.

I would say that Yes reached greater heights of creativity, but Genesis is a more consistent band.

Close to the Edge and Tales from Topographic Oceans went further off the map than Genesis ever dared. But Genesis managed to remain strong through the changes of the late 70's. Yes kind of lost focus at that point.

I think, however, that these are the two Progressive bands which made the most of the changes in the 80's.

Hard choice for me, specially when we are talking about the classic era of both bands. Later, genesis went south while yes maintained a somehow better quality. For that maybe yes, but during the classic period, both were fantastic and maybe the most influential bands for the present generation of prog bands.

If I did a top 10 combined album chart:

1) Close to the edge (10 points)
2) Relayer (9)
3) The Lamb (8)
4) Selling england.. (7)
5) Going for the one (6)
6) Foxtrot (5)
7) Tales (4)
8) Fragile (3)
9) Wind & Wuthering (2)
10)A Trick of the tail (1)

Yes = 32
Genesis = 23

I can still love them both dearly though right?

First it must be asked, which do you like better, apples or oranges?

That said, I think in a few hundred years, Yes will be largely forgotten, and Genesis will live on.

I have seen both many times live also since the 70s, in all configs, and Yes has never been anywhere as consistent in intensity, Genesis has no equal live.

Ehh, I guess it depends on how you look at it. A lot of people seem to think "and then there were three" was a weak album. Yes, I know people feel that way about Tormato too. However, Drama is just as strong as Duke and less poppy so I would disagree with you there. Also, I would add "relayer" to the albums that Yes did that went further off the map. Genesid did go "out there" a few times though especially on TLLDOBW but I agree not like YES did. Then again even YES didn't go as far out there as King Crimson did imo.

Yes

70's very little between them in quality but Yes were a bit more interesting and adventurous to my ears.
80's very little between them . Duke and Drama were both exceptionally good and then I think Yes have the 'edge'
Early 90's Talk is a very good album and much better than The Way We Walk.
Later on Genesis did that horrid Calling All Stations while Yes produced their weakest album Open You Eyes but Magnification and Keystudio were both again very good releases. Genesis did then have that surprisingly good live reboot but no new studio albums. Yes on the other hand have at least put out a couple of reasonable releases FFH and Heaven and Earth and tour regularly.

Regarding the PA archives.....
Yes has 5  four star albums and Genesis has 7 four star albums....after that they both have 3 and 2 star work based on votes.
Not a huge difference imho and as someone mentioned above the later Genesis and Yes albums were both below their best work by anyone's measure.

So in the end it simply comes down to personal taste.

Concert attendance is also in Genesis favor, and if Gabriel and Hackett, were to do a tour with Genesis it would be off the charts.

I love Yes, and have been seeing them live since 1979, over 10 times with every major config, however they have never moved me like Genesis in concert.

Yes, album-wise, can be hit or miss for me. The albums I really love are Close to the edge, Going For The One, Drama, and Big Generator. (Big Generator is kinda a guilty pleasure album for me) With Genesis, however, I can say i love the majority of their studio discography. (Minus Abacab and Calling All Stations). Genesis wins for me.

Not sure what astrology has to do with this BUT I'm with you here. I think both bands are two of the finest prog bands of all-time. I mean their influence alone puts them at the top of the heap. I think Genesis were a much more consistent band, but I think when Yes were on, they gave Genesis a run for their money. I don't think I could imagine my life now without those early Yes classics like The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Going For The One, or Relayer. These albums alone are why I rate Yes so highly and why I'll continue to return to their music time and time again.

1973-74 Pretty even. Prog bands went a bit stupid in this period with over the top albums which get overrated here
1975-1980 Genesis win

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Someone should do a search of all the various Yes versus Genesis polls over the years and add up all of the results to see who the ultimate winner is.

Granted, we'll probably find that the results are something like

Genesis:  11,651       Yes:   11,651

Yes is my favorite band, but Genesis is in my top 3 as well.

I prefer their drivel. Problem?

Why would there be?

Both bands stuttered by 1977, some marginal decent material appeared afterwards.  I remain a huge loyal fan of both but the last albums I bought on release was 90125 by Yes and Three Sides Live by Genesis.  Last saw Yes live on the 'Union Tour' and Genesis in 1987.  There I left them both with treasured memories.

 - Yes: 36 votes
 - Genesis: 48 votes

Does that mean that there so many people who actually like only one of the two bands, provided the options below as well?

 - I like one band more than the other: 1 vote
 - I dislike one band more than the other: 1 vote

I think my proper answer would be "Now I'm so confused that I don't know what to do."

Poll Question: Who is more popular in PA, Yes or Genesis?

I would say Genesis is more popular....as far as my personal taste I like them equally.

referring to what a lot of people have stated an unabashed love for as 'sub par drivel' is obnoxious.

goes a little beyond 'an opinion'

No it doesn't... no matter what you may feel about it, it is what I think - and with good reason. Where is the musicianship in Genesis' music? Which band member is even halfway proficient? It all boils down to repetitive and grating melodies. 70's and 80's Genesis are the same thing.

Easy does it, PP. Describing the musicianship of Genesis the way you did was a tad out of line. I mean, Gabriel, Banks, and Rutherford had only been at it since first collaborating as schoolboys, and Collins and Hackett have easily and consistently ranked among the best of prog drummers and guitarists plying their craft. As for the band's post-Gabriel and Hackett era, there still was some consummate ability to deliver the music no matter how good or bad the music really was. I can't really put Genesis under the Yes guys or vice versa when it comes to how well they'd honed their collective skills as musicians. As for whose a better band, well, pick it (and you did). And lighten up.

I would have to say If you look at that specific time period and compare the output Genesis definitely wins.

Wind and Wuthering: better than Going for the One
And Then There were Three: way better than  Tormato
Duke: not quite as good as Drama

2 out of three for Genesis.

the thing about this poll, is that it obviously isn't constructed properly to have
a meaningful vote if you like both equally....so just keep voting for yes if you
hold that position until they catch up.

Tony Banks is one of the greatest ever keyboard players - not my opinion but that of Keith Emerson

Steve Hackett - sub par? I don't think we really want to go there do weLOL
