Bowdown

Here - an easy vote for Rush.
I like Rush's classic era more than Genesis' plus Rush's consistently great, though still everchanging albums afterwards are a huge plus. Genesis' pop period is good, but not that good.

I voted for Genesis. They're my favorite band after all, so I could never not vote for them. I love Rush, though. Such an amazing band and a favorite of mine.

Genesis, not including everything released after "Wind and Wuthering". But Gabriel's Genesis blows away Rush, IMO. And I like Rush.

But in all honesty I don't think 3 very good musicians can top 5 genius musicians.

I think it's apples/oranges really. Both bands couldn't be more different than each other. Rush aren't a 'Symphonic Prog' band. It would be different if the poll pitted two bands who performed within that style against each other, but, alas, another poll that doesn't make much sense.

Yes, they definitely could, but the general style of both Genesis and Rush are poles apart from each other stylistically, don't you think?

I agree, though I've heard prog bands that are more different from each other than Genesis are from Rush. However, the way I look at it isn't from the angle of how different they are from each other stylistically. Another way to think about it would be based on certain criteria, certain merits: knack for melody, consistency, emotional power, eclecticism, memorability of material, originality, etc.

If I were to think about using the criteria you've selected, I still think it's apples/oranges. Both bands express something completely different emotionally and intellectually. I love both bands, but Genesis are my favorite band of all-time.

That's a weird comment. Rush are rock with proggy overtones? I think you should get more Rush albums, maybe you're refering to their 80's albums.

And how can 3 musicians top 5 musicians?? It's not math man. By this logic you should love Gentle Giant more than Genesis and Asia more than Rush.

The poll is about the two most popular prog bands in PA. As long as they are prog, the poll makes sense. And it's so supposed to be for fun so forget tying to make sense of it and have some fun. In two days from now no one will care who voted for who, who won, and what band's were even in the poles unless members go back and look up the poll. (like me) Wink

I agree.  I like how they sort of orchestrate their music.  Not that there's any orchestra but just the way they develop their music is quite intricate.  The interlude of Mad Mad Moon is a good example of what I am thinking.

I have to say that they will both live on into eternity, because they both embody the essence of what makes the greatest music last into the ages.

I was a Rush fanatic before Genesis, after seeing Rush in 1978 Hemispheres tour at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, I was hooked , Then Neil Peart was on a Radio Show afterward where he said that he was into Jazz music, and that he was not in the same league with the greatest Jazz drummers, I did not understand at that time, until years later , having seen Genesis live , and seeing it happen nightly, whereas Rush did not have the consistency , and then I realized what Neil was talking about when it comes to the world's greatest drummers.

It was also interesting later that while Phil collins was scheduled to produce Buddy Rich's new solo album, it did not come to pass because Buddy died before they could.

It is also Ironic that then when a tribute was done to Buddy, Phil produced it, and Neil hosted it.

Rush turned out way more prolific over the expansive decades.....and for me no bands sound as similar to Genesis as Rush did.....Genesis only by their output of 70-83 and then Rush took over with even more wonderful albums whilst the Genesis flame withered.

Genesis is brilliance, for a decent portion of their catalog, they are my #2.

Rush is far more consistent, more meticulous of their craft...In many ways Rush is its own music genre. The Rush group chemistry is the best, not sure there is a band of the past 25+ yrs that comes close to what they have.

Both are fantastic bands, but I'd postulate that Genesis is (was?) considerably "proggier" from the genre purist's point of view. I have been listening to both Genesis and Rush since the 1970s, so I made up my mind long ago: Genesis is archetypal,  thoroughbred "symphonic prog", while Rush is "hard rock/heavy metal with an extra layer of sophistication", which, I guess, makes them "progressive metal".  Thus the word "prog" functions as a noun in Genesis and an adjective in Rush.

Maybe I'm reading you wrong, but isn't this poll asking which band you prefer?
I guess you're saying the 'proggier' a band is the better the music is? That doesn't make sense to me, but then again I never saw prog as a stamp of quality.
I take it you prefer Henry Cow over Genesis then?

And one important thing :
We are here to talk about music and our opinions about music NOT talk about other members. Unfortunately some guys attack to opposite opinions without musical reasons and they make a personal discussion. Please guys don't judge others that have opposite opinions!!

And WTF means welcome to Facebook.Wink

But there are two issues with the remarks concerning Rush and Genesis.

One is an opinion - he hates Genesis.

But saying one is "better" than the other is a judgment not an opinion. Like and dislike is one thing, anyone and everyone does this, but a statement of competence (how is one better  than the other) can be challenged. I know within the bounds of normal bog standard communication (like between Sex Pistols fans) then any old rubbish gets passed off as "understood". But progarchives IMHO is "better" though ... more likeable?

The two means of expression often get confused. The first is a belief and is no more or less than that, the other could be actionable.

e.g. Imagine if someone were to compare you to another person. I don't like you, Joe is much better than you... does this mean Joe is more likeable; is that what is really meant? Or better at doing the job? Just because some one is likeable does not make them better just... likeable to someone.

Don't mean to come off as rude, but what exactly is Rush then?

Rush is simply too good to be put in a genre. LOL

Rush is a heavy stadium rock band with some prog overtones. Lot's of bands have prog overtones--Majority of Rush fans wouldn't listen to Tales or Lamb if their life depended on it.LOL

I've never seen Rush as an arena rock band. I've always seen them as a progressive hard rock band. Also, most people I know who like Rush also like Yes. What Rush album/s have you heard, if you only heard their debut or Roll the Bones, I could see how you could reach that conclusion.

Rush has been my favorite band since about 1980 so Rush it is.
I do like Genesis though :)

In 1976 Rush managed to out-silly Genesis in the embarrassing-costume-contest. Rush it is!

I've only seen them once - at the San Diego Sports ARENA! Does that taint my opinion? It at least makes them a progressive, hard rock, arena band.

^True, that does make them an arena band. When I hear 'arena rock' though, I think of bands like Def Leppard, Whitesnake, etc. LOL

Many commenters here already had a clear favorite.  I did not.  I love both of these bands so much!  I go to them for different reasons.  They each have had such illustrious careers.

Here's why I gave it to Rush - both bands became more commercially accessible in the 80's, but Rush's lyrics got better, where Genesis' got much less interesting.
