Topic: How was PA in the very beginning?

Subject: How was PA in the very beginning?

I wonder if there are still members around senior enough (not about age but in period knowing about PA) to tell us how was PA in the beginning.
Was it significantly different than now?
Who was adding albums and bios, and writing the early reviews, M@x himself and a few helpers?
Was the look of the homepage similar? (I can imagine than the header collage came quite later courtesy of a member whose name I do not remember but who posted a few such collages).
Was there a forum from the beginning?
It would be amazing if anyone would have kept screenshots of how the site looked like in the past but I guess that's too much asking for...

(I joined in Feb 2010 and I had been already checking the site for a few months, I'd say I discovered it somewhere in mid 2009).

Oh yeah! Those were great days! It all started before this new Prog explosion and there were very few Prog bands around so we were focused mostly on old stuff. And PA was a rather niche website - a real hidden gem! I sometimes miss that atmosphere... On the darker side, there were some really nasty trolls as well.
And one more thing: you could actually download mp3s and not just stream them.

Those days are all gone now but one thing's still true
When I look and I find
I still love you...

BTW, it's hard to believe it will be my 10th anniversary in May next year! Shocked

I came a bit later rather than the really early years, but I remember it being a lot more fun then though that might have something to do with just turning 20 and chatting with a lot of people in my age group, only a few of which are still around (Hatman being the most prominent).

Very, very cool. The Interweb was a very different landscape back them. I look back at my first web site and as nice a job as I did, it looks kinda dated today.  And to think you could...GASP...download mp3's. Well that may have just been the tick that broke the music industry's back. We should all be thoroughly pissed at ourselves and ban us from this very site.LOL

I registered in 2008, stopped coming here regularly between 2011 and 2013, so it seems to me somewhere around then many of the original regular posters also left only to never come back. Henry Plainview, for instance, as well as Vompatti though I still keep in touch with the Wombat on Facebook.

It seems like the people who stopped posting overwhelmingly were among the younger members on the forum, which I find pretty interesting since usually it's the opposite way around. That's probably a main reason that the overall music discussion climate is nowhere as "fanboyish", for lack of a better word, as it was back then.

Perhaps the scope was more limited too, now the spectrum of subgenres and bands present and discussed in the site is huge and few if any people can be highly informed about them all. I guess that if we would still concentrate our threads on the classic discography of Genesis, Yes, ELP, Camel, Crimson and Floyd, the debates would sound pretty well informed as well. Plus, many younger people are joining who have to discover the classics working backwards, and this is not a bad thing at all (and they are surely better informed than me when it comes to modern Prog bands like The Mars Volta, Haken or whatever).

Interesting comment.  But I don't remember either Henry or Vompatti as being fanboyish, if anything they, esp HP, were quite subjectivist.  There are others though who have disappeared, JS19, dtguitarfan.  Some of the regulars fell out, I think - JLocke, toddrulfusteg or whatshismoniker.  Of course, micky and raff have stopped posting on this forum, Cert1fied is either too busy or has lost interest.  Mike is another once active contributor who seems to have gone.

Unless it's been in an Electronic or Audiophile thread, it's been a very long time since either he or Oliverstoned have posted.

Referring more to KE9, that belligerent ELP fan someone mentioned on the previous page, and similar people. There were way more people like that in 2008. I wager that somewhere along the line they either grew up, left or got banned after the remainder of the forum got tired of dealing with them.

BTW it's a bit of a pity that a lot of people don't post here anymore, like Threefates, Trouserpress, Snow Dog, the Bald Angels, Erik Neuteboom... Or they pop up every once in a while, like Vompatti...
Well, that's just as it is, but I remember the good old days. Okay, these days are good too, but it's a different kind of good. Smile

The two I miss the most are Micky and Raff!

Yes, they were also good company on the site.
Both in their very own way.

Had some great conversations with Mickey and Raff. I promised her I would go to Her citizenship ceremony if she ever made the leap but then they both kind of disappeared.

Also miss Snow Dog, marktheshark, WaywardSon, Australian... Lots of others too. Seems like the tempo on the site has slowed down the last couple of years - or maybe it's just me.

Hi,

That's not bad Ep .... those screenshots (and material) were better than most of the stuff out there!

I didn't come here until 2007 (so says the Avatar!!!), and I don't exactly remember the number of threads by then, which would have been 3 years AFTER EP's links ... which even I do not remember ... however, based on my memory, all conversations and work have always been fairly good and valuable in many ways ... despite many of us not agreeing to it all.

The only change/suggestion I want to see is the top 100 be only BANDS ... and not albums, so we start RESPECTING the music itself, and not our "favorite" ablums! It would take the "favoritism" out of it all a bit more, and I think it would help create a more respectful relationship with jazz and classical folks for the appreciation of music and its value to one's life. For that to happen the kid stuff, or "fan'aticism" needs to be slowed down, and the "top ten" is all about fans, and not the music!

If you want the music to be remembered 100 years from now, the fan stuff will likely have to be cut down and the discussion get more intimate and detailed about the beauty of the music.

^Yes indeed, but unfortunately these thoughts mean nothing today when the music is accessible plainly by the click of a mouse - you need just an affordable credit card in order to buy ANY artistic work you desire AFTER listening to it first. Besides that, today people in general don't give importance to the 'discomfort' of deep thinking in a world where everything is just the huge information (not knowledge) we have to deal with it everyday. And so the ignorance gives way to the idolatry you meant.

Karny (or KE9) managed to fall out with many over on the Greg lake site. He was a total idiot. He even faked his own internet death by pretending to be his brother and posting a personal message to a 15 year old Russian girl (also a member of the site) claiming he had died in a car accident. He returned later but then got short thrift obviously. I told him I would call the police if he ever came anywhere near me.

^ I want to believe what happened, but that sounds all too horrifying. If you could call the police on him, I take it that he lived/lives in your vicinity, right?

Isn't Raff now just an admin at MetalMusicArchives? I don't use that site very often, so I'm not sure but I remember seeing her a couple times I lurked there.

KE9 sounds like quite the character, as in a person with possible neglected or improperly treated mental heath issues which is actually more sad than funny if you ask me. Henry Plainview just came across as an otherwise normal person with a very odd sense of humour.

Yeah, I remember them all. Snow Dog still posts does he not?

I met Trouserpress at the first Prog Archives curry night in London. Very nice chap. Along with Sean Trane, Chopper, Sigod, Chris Syzergy, Richard H and Jim Garten (?) Memory is hazy...

Raff is a lovely lady, I've met her in person at Cuneifest, NF and last years ProgDay. Her interaction with the internet goes through ebbs and flows and I think she's pretty much taking a break for now. She hasn't posted to her blog in a couple of months

In the end, this is about OUR choices. We simply accept and take what is "given us". We don't have the fight tomake the change, and support, and that means that the more we want to change things, the less theywill change!!!!

All in all, it's better than nothing, although I still think that silence is better, and learning your own inner path is way more important than anyone telling you what to go listen to, so we can become a better "social" person that society wants us to become to ensure you buy their car, 2.1 children, green sox, you know ... the usual cheap crap made in heaven knows where that you won't find out until there is a fire and 500 folks died from it, and they were only making $3 dollars per day!

At least PA is voluntary, I have been told! But in Sociology 101 they tell you that "interest groups" run 85% of all institutions out there to favor their own views!

This is a very interesting thread. I just joined in Feb. 2010 so don't know directly what the beginning was like. I have never met anybody from PA, but it sure would be fun to! I don't have the income bracket to do a lot of  long distance travelling but if any of you folks come to Ottawa, maybe we can link up sometime?

I missed one planned PA meeting (was there more than one?), which was a pity in retrospect. Oh well... no use crying over spilled milk.

Snow Dog hasn't posted in a long time, but hopefully he turns up once again.

I had let him have my address so he could send me a CD ( he never did). That was before all this all blew up. I know its unlikely he would visit me but didn't want to take a chance.

Wallace here!

Thankyou for the fond rememberances.

I dont remember much of the old days here. (I suppose I was here around 2005 on???) Back then I was mainly posting to a Yahoo prog group.

I would like to look up those elder-days posts, but those two linkiepoos given seem to only get one the Wayback Machine and not much else.

I recall Bald Freida (oar summart loikes) and she was quite knowledgeable. Also there was a very sharp poster, Barbitzoter, or mebbe I'm confusing with Progressive Ears.

Unlike former stalwarts who seem, in the main, to have deserted the ship, I would continue on Progarchives, given the opportunity.
THAT is just the problem. (I expect this post to be wiped-out by the end of the day.)

That was a good thread. Too bad it did not go anywhere.

My contention remains the same: "war" is the theme most-used in pwog. (Followed closely by "death".)

In the very beginning it was just another prog website like prog toes, prog lands and prog freaks. However, progarchives survived and went way beyond them in part because they allowed anyone to write reviews. There was a site back in the late nineties called prog net that I wrote reviews on that also let anyone write reviews but that one soon went under. Somehow P.A. just exploded and the rest is history. I'd even go as far as to say that P. A. played a role in making prog as popular as it is today.

One music forum that really has changed over the last many years is Metal-Archives, where I posted from 2006-2008. Back then it was populated mostly by crazies and junkies and Nazi Occultists but now it consists just of boring normal people.

Personally, I think when the lord and master of many of these crazies, Varg, was finally released from prison and started pumping out these mediocre albums and writing daft and silly blog posts, the Burzum worshipers gave up on everything and went back to school to become accountants.
