Great albums by each band here IMO - the top four would be 5-star albums, the bottom two 4-stars. You can probably guess where my vote's going though Tongue

Genesis > ELP=Pink Floyd > King Crimson > Yes > Jethro Tull

DSoTM, though TfTO is great as well as Selling England. heard A Passion Play once before on Spotify but may need to listen to it more, same with Larks' Tongues; Part II is something that's worthwhile, really liking that riff. For Brain Salad Surgery, Still... You Turn Me On and the 1st impression of Karn Evil 9 are very good, and i have heard all 29 and a half minutes of the later, crazy stuff that was cool imo.

I voted for Genesis' Selling England By The Pound, but Pink Floyd and King Crimson are very close. I can't say I think ELP's Brain Salad Surgery is that great because it has too many weak moments for me. The same with Yes' Tales from Topographic Oceans, which I thought was incredibly long-winded and short on solid musical material. Personally, I never understood the love for the album. Of course, I'd never vote for Jethro Tull because I'm simply not a fan.

Selling England just ahead of DSOTM. Both are superb.

BSS will always have a soft spot for me because I quite like it and my late partner used to loathe it, so I played it whenever I wanted rid of him for a bit of peace and quiet!

The other three are pretty awful.

Voted for DSotM. LTiA would be my second choice.

The other albums have their moments but aren't at the same level for me.

2-ELP - Brain Salad Surgery

4- Jethro Tull - A Passion Play

The rest of my list would look somewhat like this:

Selling England By The Pound
Lark's Tongue In Aspic
Tales From Topographic Oceans
A Passion Play
Dark Side of The Moon
Brain Salad Surgery

Yes, my choices are rather unorthodox. But then again, so isn't my taste Wink.

5-Tales From Topographic Oceans
6-A Passion Play

These are all really good choices.  My favorite is Jethro Tull's Passion Play.  Perhaps the only time I would vote for Tull in this series of polls.  It's just head and shoulders above the rest of the Tull albums IMO.

BSS gets my vote. After that TFTO. Both divide opinion but those bands were 'pushing the envelope' musically.

DSOTM and SEBTP just don't do it for me. Even though they have some exceptional tracks I just can't get excited listening to them and don't feel I'm being challenged in any way. I suspect its the lyrical content that elevates these albums and that's not so important to me.

This is a tough vote.  My natural inclination is to always side with King Crimson, no matter the year.  Pink Floyd, on the other hand, is a hit or miss band for me.  I'll pick Dark Side because I don't think Pink Floyd ever topped it.

Yo, ho, yo, ho A Passion Play for me! I do understand how 'Moon and 'Pound lead this thing, but I tend towards Larks' Tongues more often than those two. I always feel that 'Moon is best appreciated listening to in one sitting (and I just don't have that kind of time unless it's background noise), and 'Pound is a little staid in its approach (and points off for I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe).

Not my favorite Jethro Tull-album, but I can't vote for the others. I just don't like the other albums.
Alhough Dark Side of the Moon is a great album, it sounds rather bland and boring to me. Classic dad-rock.

^Well, I don´t at least many dad-rock listeners can accept the experimental On the Run. Or bells in the begin of Time. Also Great Gig would be too much to them.

Still.
Although I really like Pink Floyd (Animals is my favorite), many of their albums sound really middle-of-the road.
And mostly I put them in the same category as The Eagles, Boston, Dire Straits, etc.
Maybe it's the straight forward rock-approach, the bluesy (extended) guitarsolos.

Don't get me wrong, I like Pink Floyd. But I would choose Jethro Tull over Pink Floyd anytime of the day.
Jehtro Tull released at least 15 stellar albums, Pink Floyd maybe three.

But to keep the original purpose of this poll: the chosen albums of all the other artists, I have played them all, and liked neither of them. Even Passion Play is my least favorite Tull-album.
Maybe 1973 was too self-indulgent for these bands. Apparently they all released their worst albums.

Posted By: Mortte
Date Posted: February 22 2018 at 04:47
^I guess you have listened also their pre-dark side era? I love also Jethro Tull, but Floyd has always been bigger to me. I can put Floyd´s eighties-nineties albums into same category as Eagles etc. but not really their sixties and seventies albums.

Posted By: Mortte
Date Posted: February 22 2018 at 04:48
About 1973 I also think 1970 and 1971 were much better years for many bands.

Posted By: Kingsnake
Date Posted: February 22 2018 at 05:26
^ I think I'm not that into the kind of pysch-rock that Pink Floyd produced in the early days.

I have listened to it, but I guess I'm more a fan of melodic symphonic rock like Animals and Wish You Were Here.
As an example: I think Eloy are way better (sans the leadguitar and leadvocals) than Pink Floyd. The synths, bass and drums are superior in Eloy than Pink Floyd. I think Pink Floyd has the most boring drummer in history of rockmusic.
But I'm not here to bash music by bands I'm not into.
I just like a few albums by Pink Floyd, Yes and Genesis, and I absolutely adore Jethro Tull.

^Mason is of course no Bruford, but I really like´s playing. Also, if you´re symphonic prog fan and not listened Atom Heart Mother and Meddle (Echoes), you really should. Not listened much Eloy, but what I´ve heard that has sounded much more boring than Floyd to me.

That's how musical taste works hahahaha

I can't deal with boring drumming, and others can't deal with annoying singers.

Most dislike Eloy because of the accent of Frank Bornemann.
But Jürgen Rosenthal's drumming is otherworldy.

And believe me, I listened to all the Pink Floyd-albums.
It didn't hurt and it didn't traumatize me, but it also didn't make me dance, smile, sing along, groove along, dream along etc.
Except for Animals wich is one of the greatest albums ever made.

^Really like Jürgen´s drumming in Scorpions Fly to the Rainbow! Floyd hasn´t ever caused me such reactions you described. When I first time heard the Piper at the Gates of Dawn, I really didn´t understand what it was. It was kind of shock to me, but in some years turned to really positive experience!

I like weird music. Music that makes me go 'what the hell is this?', but do I love it? Do I constantly play it? Not really.

I am more interested in melodic and symphonic music for enjoyment. All the experimentalism is musical art, and I do have respect for it and love to hear what some are up to, but it when it comes to enjoying music, I'd rather play what really moves me.

And Jehtro Tull continues to move me, even though Passion Play is their worst, hahaha.
Sometimes bands/music move me, that are really simple, middle-of-the-road like Al Stewart and a-ha.
And sometime complex music moves me like Gentle Giant or Wobbler or Kraan.

Recently I got all excited about Gösta Berlings Saga for instance.
But I could never get into the whole Tool-thing. It's still all a matter of taste and listening-experience.
