The Prog movement might never have started if the Beatles hadn't started experimenting with popular music. So for fun I made my own prog album from The Beatles. Imagine... The Beatles trained me at a very early age to look for interesting combinations and structures in music. It's the backbone upon which my whole collection is based. In my opinion, there isn't a "Beatles prog side" and I think prog rock would have existed without them anyway.

The Beatles were my first favorite group. Growing up, my parents had a few albums. Maybe that's where my love of prog ideas started.

Beatles “prog side” emerged after Rubber Soul. They were definitely pioneers of so called progressive rock. Conversely, if they didn’t do it, someone else would have. |

And here we are again about what is progressive and what isn't. 
I have never thought the BEATLES were 'progressive rock' in any way but they did have some unusual use of instruments, orchestration, and techniques in some of their songs but when I was listening to them back in the day (I'm 63), I always saw those elements as more psych pop/rock. ------------- One does nothing yet nothing is left undone. OK. I'm French. Sorry for the accent  I know The Beatles weren't prog. That term did not even exist until 1970. But they were the pioneers. And they were much more than just a psychedelic pop rock band even if they had 5 or 6 real psychedelic songs. They were more experimental and innovator to me. I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of The Beatles, but however you look at things, Bruford said it perfectly. They may not be Prog per se, but surely innovative, adventurous and influential - everything a Prog band is

Hi. Many of us (PA fans) love or like beatles. I start with them when I was 13-14 years old( Now I am 45). I agree with you my friend but IMO they never been a Prog Rock band or they never start Prog Rock Genre. As you said I think They are " just a psychedelic pop rock band " |

Thanks. I used of part of your post to explain mine!! I know your opinion clearly. I living with "Progressive" music and fortunately my family (my wife and my children) understand me.I love Beatles but they are not a Prog Rock band (IMO). Thanks again for your time and answer.

I don't know why people want to call The Beatles a progressive rock band. They did some 'progressive things' with some of their music and expanded the horizons of what could be done with pop and rock in the studio.
Prog Rock...they ain't.

I have to be honest but I consider "A Day in The Life" and "I Want You "She's So Heavy" as Progressive Rock. I think certain people need to get over the fact that the same band who wrote "I Want to Hold Your Hand" transformed themselves into the most influential artist in the Progressive Rock movement. Nothing against Zappa but he did not have the wide reach as The Beatles in terms of popularity and influence. I gather more progressive rock musicians were initially influenced by The Beatles to get into music far more than Zappa. It's no coincidence that Robert Fripp was influenced to get into rock music after hearing "A Day In The Life". |

| I heard a guy say once that "I want you/she's so heavy" is pure prog. Not sure if I agree with that although it could be considered proto. THe closest the Beatles came to typical prog imo was probably "a day in the life." TO be honest I don't think they did all that much that was similar to the later prog. Although they were very experimental at times I wouldn't really call them prog. That being said they did get the ball rolling and are important in the development of adventurous music that led directly to prog. |

The Beatles are not truly progressive to what the main standard or true definition of what Prog music delivers, but they have a ton of well-thought out progressive tendencies to a few of their albums. Certainly Sargent Peppers paved the way for a wonderful model of experimentation by fusing eastern cultural music backgrounds into their overall sound while creating some songs that have some incredible changes in direction. Amazing for 1967. I'd say the Beatles, when they put on their Prog hats, are really quite good at it. :) ------------- Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣 |

There's nothing wrong with including a great non-prog song. Most prog bands have the odd non-prog song.

They are not Prog Rock or what we define regularly as Prog. Their usage of the mellotron was superb , inventive/creative, and influenced part of the birth of Prog. King Crimson in 69' used to rehearse "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" so I attribute their overall influence in the elements/ideas they came up with, (along with George Martin) to produce something unique within a song by using effects and unlike many others who attempted to catch up with The Beatles during the rat race when many bands were trying to sound like Sgt. Pepper. For a while it was almost insulting. It was an influential album, but too many artists were simply out-right copying the style. The Beatles late 60's material presented an idea to combine influences from other styles that were not Rock. The way in which The Beatles produced that as an end product, it became evident to most internationally known artists that they were surrounding the melody unlike anyone before them. The choice to use a sitar, a French Horn, or string quartet to enhance the vocal, creating a style that couldn't always be catagorized as Pop. Maybe years later..it was, but not in 67' when people first heard Sgt. Pepper. What happened later is not any motive on behalf of The Beatles. When it was first released, it felt very strange to people and they were drawn in by it's intensity of sound. That's why it influenced Progressive Rock. It was mainly an aspect to the actual style that produced new ideas in Prog. It was a premature stage . |
