I'm sure this poll will have been done before but I can't find it... Two classic psychedelic prog songs from 1967 that became huge pretty unexpectedly. Just wondering which is your favourite. Procol Harum for me just because of how fresh it was in terms of lyrics, instruments, plus it has a killer climax on the chorus. The Moodies song is right up there too, so quite a difficult poll. Thanks for any feedback

A lot of the time The Moodies would win most things for me, but I prefer A Whiter Shade of Pale.

The Moodes by a mile. I love Procol Harum as much as the next guy (see my 5 star review of Shine on Brightly), but I've never liked that song.

Both songs a bit old sounding for me. 1967 music started to sound interesting with bands like Cream, Hendrix and The doors but I don't like much else from that year ------------- All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock. |

Maybe I've heard the famous chord progression too many times as a kid or I just don't like the chords, or I just don't like the chords played on the organ, or I just don't like Brooker's voice. I guess there are a number of factors in this equation. And the way "Nights ..." was produced - very impressive. |

I like em both although the chorus on Satin can get a little grating to these ears. The love you part always makes me cringe a little. Voted for Pale. I like Nights a lot, but I remember being a kid in '67 and hearing AWSOP every time I turned on the radio or jumped into a car. I like both songs and both bands. The Moodies came first for me and are more prog. Procol's much newer and fresher to me. A trickier poll - for me - would be having to choose between Justin Hayward and Gary Brooker. Going to have to say a tie here. It'd be too unfair to choose one band over the other in this case.

3 years later and I would be inclined to change my vote if given the chance. That organ is fantastic although Hayward surely give his best vocal performance ever(?)

Hayward has a wonderful voice, is a solid songwriter and adequate guitarist. The other members of the Moodies I've just never warmed too. Procol Harum on the other hand has a great front man in Brooker as well as some other fine musicians.

That's a close one for me. I went for Whiter Shade because I like the LSD aspect to it. ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Love them both but I have to go with the Moodies as sentimental favorite. They were my first taste of what later became known as Prog. Sort of like you never forget your first love. ------------- "You never had the things you thought you should have had and you'll not get them now..." |
