Annie Haslam seems the obvious pick, but my personal favorite female singer is Jerney Kaagman of Earth & Fire

Well, I do not know exactly who is the queen of classic prog (Anny Haslam or Jerney Kaagman or Kate Bush), but I'm pretty sure who is the princess of contemporary prog - with her outworldly & charismatic voice, certainly that's Marjana from iamthemorning.

With all seriousness though, I think ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN is right up there with some of the great prog female artists. Also love Tarja Turunen formerly of NIGHTWISH.

My all time favourite female vocalist per se is Christina Scabbia. Not a Prog artist, but it was such a blessing that she appear on the latest Ayreon album. Great performance as 'the mother.'

I prefer Annie as a vocalist.  But as a songwriter, Kate Bush is in a league of her own.  I mean, why would she even need to be just a 'queen' of prog as if women always have to run a separate race?  She richly deserves a place among the most original and unique artists in prog and in rock and pop music overall too.

Let's say that Prog is a republic, or, better, an academy led by a collective of deans: Rob, Jon, Ian, Fred, the many Steves, etc...

If we have to crown a Queen, my vote goes to the late Lindsay Cooper.

Of course, a living Queen would be better: then, Laurie Anderson.

Hmmm...the contest seem to be between Annie Haslam and Kate Bush, and then Kate gets my vote. Annie is the better singer of the two, but Kate Bush is much more versatile being not only singer but also pianist, songwriter, producer and trendsetter.
And now some nominees:
Björk (has all the qualities of Kate Bush, and almost as good too)
Sonja Kristina (Curved Air)
Anneke van Giersbergen (Gathering)
Laurie Anderson
Loreena McKennitt (a voice that rivals Annie Haslam, why isn't she on PA?)
Marjana (iamthemorning) (just one album so far, but very promising indeed)
Also worth mentioning:
Tori Amos (I like her, but she's not in the same league as Björk or Kate Bush)
Tarja Turunen (Nightwish)
And some non-singers:
Hiromi Uehara (keyboard virtuoso)
Tina Weymouth (has much bigger part in the Talking Heads sound than what she's generally credited for)

There are moments, but I would agree that "completely" is not always there.

However, Kate Bush is quite independent and has always been her own person and writer, and that is far more progressive than most of the bands that we listen to over here. The only problem is that we do not accept that a woman can do keyboards like Keith or Tony (who the fudge would want to?), and then do their own music. On top of it, her material is not even that boring or commercially repetitive as Genesis became!

I would also suggest that Renate of AD2 is also quite a feminist, however, the band has even made fun of that in "Hijack", which is a bit sad, but I think that Renate knew that what they satirised was the extreme side of it, not the feminist side of it, which she has been fairly vocal about it in many pieces here and there. Their material, sometimes is very strong and quite venomous.

My biggest problem is that it looks like we're looking at these and making a call as if we would want to date that person, and that's sad. We should have a better say about the artist and their work, than just what her body and dress looked like. And yes, the lady from "Earth and Fire" has a very nice voice, but I hardly think that she is better than Kate or Annie. Annie, however is not progressive at all.

I noticed that Dagmar is left out cold! But we could go after Siouxie, Lene Lovitch, Toyah and so many others that did different things ... I guess they were all ugly!

Confused

There are plenty of highly admirable women in prog (or prog related), several of whom get mentions here, but for me the one who deserves the title of 'Queen of Prog' is Anne-Marie Helder (aka the ‘Little Red Rock Chick’: solo, Karnataka, Panic Room, Mostly Autumn, Luna Rossa) who is not only a magnificent singer/songwriter, but also plays flute, guitar, keyboards, and percussion.

Kate is more creative. She has a more versatile voice and much more adventurous daring in using it. She has a singularly unique and unusual vision as well as an obsession with quality and detail like no one else in prog, male or female.

Eleven highly distinctive and unusual albums--eight of which are currently in Britain's Top 40. Incredible.

Annie has a gorgeous voice. As does Anneke, Rachel, Sonja, Marjana, Sharron Fortnam, Elaine di Falco, Joanne Hogg, Julie Kiss, Petronella Nettermalm, and Carolina Prieto.

The modern "Queen" of Prog has got to be Elaine di Falco

Caveman Shoestore, (Caveman) Hughstore with Hugh Hopper, Three Mice, Thinking Plague, Combat Astronomy, Yugen, Dave Wiley and Friends, and Empty Days--whatever album Elaine has touched has been blessed by her talents. And she's not just a singer: she's also an accomplished keyboard player.

LOL Thanks, I saw that as well!

Considering the huge contribution that women could make to prog music, I'm really amazed that they contribute as little as they do.  Prog would be improved with far more female vocalists and instrumentalists, as would rock in general.

Let's face it....pop rock really rakes in the cash with its selection of women vocalists!  Maybe if Lady GaGa would reprise "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway?"  I bet she'd do a bang-up job with it!!

... which kind of proves the point that "prog" is of men, by men, and for men

Kate Bush would probably be the most imperial female figure of prog, if she had anything to do with prog (alternative eclectic art-pop isn't quite prog).

Anneke v G is a royal character of magnitude, but she is a bit of an outlander in the prog realm. That said, the Queen of England is German, and so was Catherine the Great of Russia. Go figure ..

Marjana is too young, and Hiromi is just way too good (and too busy being the Princess of Electric Fusion)

Annie wins, therefore, and not by default. She is the only one I can think of who is a fantastic music-maker, not weird, incontestably "prog", and has done more than enough to earn the title.

I am a huge AH fan and, if I switched on full-fanboy mode, would say she beats most prog vocalists and not just the female ones. But even by your specious non weird criteria, which appears designed to exclude Krause and Knapp, Heather Findlay and Christina Murphy would also fulfil those criteria, as does Rachel Cohen
Annie may be a better singer but she's not the only one as per those criteria.

Marjana is too young, and Hiromi is just way too good (and too busy being the Princess of Electric Fusion)Annie wins, therefore, and not by default.

However, Renaissance is still the most famous female fronted prog band. Specially if we consider full prog bands, and even more so, from the golden era of prog (the 70's, of course), so, indeed I consider Annie to be the queen of prog. And indeed, for me she is among the very best prog singers, male or female. Among my top 5 at least, and at this point I wouldn't be able to put them in order.

Don't forget about Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance. Well, if she is not the queen of Prog the. She is definitely the queen of art rock. ;)

No argument that they are indeed the most famous female fronted prog rock band.  I was only pointing out, with reference to what he said, that she's not the only one who meets those criteria.  The most notable among singers who meet those criteria, yes.

Renaissance, much respect! I am not very familiar with female vocalists, all I know from Annie is that she is a 5 octave singer (singers are a particular taste to anyone, vocals range not necessary important in this case) and she is a painter of arts. I do not know much more about her. I am not particular fond of her vocals and much more prefer the one who turned Babooshka into a sexy word instead of Grandma

At this tenure in my Prog life, I think that the beautiful Christina Booth, IS the current 'queen' of Prog. And I wish her more-than-well in recovery from her health issues.....
She has a voice that soars, beauty and aggression all backed up by wonderful Progressive music......couldn't think of anything better.......

Speaking of five octaves, I wish they didn't publicise Annie's range so much as there's a lot more to her singing than just range but the other aspects seem to get obscured.  Her rendition of If I Loved You compares favourably with even that of such legends as Sarah Vaughan.  Most prog singers have an instrument that's useful only in the context of their band or solo compositions.  Annie, like Gildenlow, can make songs sung by other singers her own.  That's tough.

The "non-weird criteria" was not designed to exclude Krause and Knapp, because I don't know who they be. Unless you mean the lovely and 100% wholesome Alison KraussThumbs Up

Also, are you sure you are using the word "specious" correctly? I have always thought that specious referred to a idea that looks legit on outside, but is based either on an hidden ulterior motive, or on a fallacy, or both. For example, environmental taxes have a lot more to do with raising revenues than with the environment.

I'm afraid I barely know her and Dead Can Dance. I mainly know their names, but not much more, and that's were I was going with the more famous thing about Renaissance.

I meant Dagmar Krause who worked in Henry Cow and Art Bears.  And it was actually Knaup, Renate Knaup (got it mixed up with Karine Knapp, a current tennis player), who was the singer of Amon Duul II. You will find that those prog rock listeners who have a liking for its more experimental side are quite familiar with both names.

I used the word specious because I find the notion that only a non weird singer could be the queen of prog fallacious.  Now, reading this follow up comment of yours, I feel that perhaps you came up with that criteria to account for your unfamiliarity with weird prog?  There are lots of talented female singers in weird prog too.  And since this is a kind of music that is progressive in its approach, I don't think there's anything wrong with a singer choosing a less conventionally appealing style, if that's what the music calls for.

As good as Annie Haslam is as a singer (and she is, even now she's in her sixties), I would never call her the queen of prog. Kate Bush's music is way more progressive than anything Renaissance ever did, even if it does not fit the traditional prog criteria. Moreover, let's not forget that she is not just a singer, but also a composer and multi-instrumentalist.

What no love for Christina Booth from Magenta? Should probably also mention Anna Holmgren from Anglagard.

My vote honestly would be a split between Stella and Annie.

Not that many to choose from. From the few female vocalists that I like, Annie Haslam will always get my vote, I do like some Bush, Booth, Or Krotenschwanz, or Sandy Denny for that matter, But Annie rules them all.

Christina - alluring, sophisticated, modern, and above all, the most gorgeous voice in Prog (next to Annie's).

At least they do get mentioned. Nobody cares about Janita Haan (Babe Ruth) anymore. That band wasn't for everybody, but their first three albums cook.

I also thought about Anna Holmgren, but it seems that most people associate "women in prog" with vocalists.
