Ah-ha, signs of prog life elsewhere in Australia!

Looks like a fine selection, mate!

Do you have a podcast to download afterwards at all?

Thank you for the kind words, mate!  No podcast, sorry - considerations with copyright rule that out unfortunately. So "Seasons Of Change" goes to air just once and that's it! Big smile

I didn't know Ian Gillan played Jazz Rock/Fusion: I'll have to investigate it because I really liked that song Smile

Thanks MD!

Yes, that's a great track - Ian channels James Brown very well I think. Cool

Have a look at http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=20567" rel="nofollow - the reviews on PA - this album mostly gets a thumbs up, not the reception I'd expect for an Ian Gillan solo album.

For now I only have this song (on a compilation CD) but I'll get this CD when I can because I love how the rest of that CD sounds.

Hi,

I listened to that Ian Gillan Band album and its really awesome. I will probably listen to that one more often than any Deep Purple album Wink

I really liked to listen to Le Orme and Hibernal two weeks ago, outstanding music Thumbs Up
That song from Sebastian Hardie that was played last week is also quite good, I'll have to investigate his music.

I missed today's first hour due to time zone changes, and the playlist seemed really good. It used to start at 11:30 and now at 10:30 and it will start at 9:30 next month. Confused

Thanks so much! Yes, "daylight saving" started here in Adelaide last Sunday, so all our clocks went forward 1 hour. I know what you mean - I believe the clocks in the "northern" hemisphere will be moving back 1 hour when daylight saving finishes there...

Yes, Sebastian Hardie is a rare band on the Australian scene, the only band I know of that did that "European" style of prog rock back in the '70's so close in style to Yes, Focus, etc.

20+ minutes of the first hour tonight was The Orb featuring Dave Gilmour anyway so tha't's easy to catch up with!

Smile

G'day, if you're not off to see the Rolling Stones in Adelaide tonight, you can put your feet up and relax from a day at the http://cheesefest.com.au/" rel="nofollow - Cheesefest in the Adelaide Parklands with another diverse, occasionally cheesy, edition of http://seasonsofchangeradio.blogspot.com.au/" rel="nofollow - Seasons  http://seasonsofchangeradio.blogspot.com.au/" rel="nofollow - of Change this Saturday night (Australian time). It includes recent music from Brisbane band Caligula's Horse, a selection from the 2006 concept album by local group Gavin O’Loghlen & Cotter’s Bequest ("A Celtic history of South Australia") and the ASO playing Pink Floyd also from 2006. And it's happy birthday to singer Jon Anderson (Yes),  French jazz pianist Jacques Loussier and the multi-talented Gil Matthews (drummer with Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, as well as house engineer/producer for Havoc Records; and more recently the guru behind the remastering and reissue of some classic Australian music from the 1970's).

8pm
A Mixed Cheese Platter:
 - Cheddar
 - Stilton
 - Mozzarella
9pm
Jon Anderson    New new world (2011) (Survival And Other Stories)
Vangelis (feat. Jon Anderson)    So long ago so clear (1975) (Heaven And Hell)
Yes    South side of the sky (1972) (Fragile)

Gil Matthews    Gil’s thing (1971) (single only, The Complete Havoc Singles)
Cybotron    Eureka (Guitar version) (1980)  (Implosion, bonus track from Abbey Moor sessions)

The cheesy hour was awesome! Big smile
I really liked those symphonic Floyd songs. Did they play 'Atom Heart Mother'? By the way, my first contact with their music was in an Australian Pink Floyd concert near me (probably the only local progressive concert ever Tongue) and I saw they are from Adelaide as well. Smile

Thanks MD - I'm glad you enjoyed it. The cheesy hour was fun to put together too, I'm sure there are quite a few other pieces I could have picked instead, prog is well endowed with all those "cheesy moments" we know and love. Rhapsody are of course so "cheesy" it seems unfair to pick them.

I don't know whether the Atom Heart Mother suite was performed in the actual ASO concerts but it's not on the CD set - suspect it wasn't performed as the choral content of AHM would have been a logistical challenge. Of the "ASO Plays Pink Floyd" CD set, CD1 is essentially an orchestral overture plus most of DSOTM, while CD2 is a grab bag of Floyd eras - a suite of Barret songs, Shine on, selections from Momentary Lapse and of course Another Brick Pt.2. AHM suite is actually one of my Floyd favourites, along with Echoes and Shine on.

Yes, the Australian Pink Floyd Show have done well for themselves!

^ I once saw a video of an italian PF tribute band/orchestra/choral that plays the entire 'Atom Heart Mother' suite and 'Summer 68'. It's really good, I would really like to see them, it's one of my favourite PF albums.

A Floyd special? I better wake up early tomorrow Tongue
Really like the new album, by the way.
Also I really liked to listen to King Crimson (even if it was from my least favourite album) and Anglagard last week.

Your first challenge for the day! Smile I'll try to make it worth your while. Listening to Syd singing "Dark globe" I thought he sounded like Roger Waters singing circa The Wall - or maybe that's just me.

Me too - I haven't picked the specific music for tonight yet though... we'll see what happens.

Thanks MD! KC are like that I think - inevitable for one thing considering the "phases" the band went through...

I never listened to any Syd solo music, it's probably a good way to start.

My instant favourites of the album were: 'It's What We Do', 'Anisina' and 'Autumn'68'. I guess it's easier to memorise the music when you have to get up to change sides four times LOL

From KC, their next album, Lizard, is one of my favourites Thumbs Up

Nice shows David! Thumbs Up

I also noticed The Wall on that Syd Barrett song, specificaly 'Mother'. The last recording of 'Echoes' with Wright is also amazing, probably as good as Pompeii.

I discovered some great bands today: Freedom To Glide (very Floyd indeed), Unitopia (I wasn't expecting that african tune after the symphonic intro and that cover pleased this Supertramp fan Tongue). Lammas Tide and Andy Jackson are also really good.

By the way, if you're interested in other Floyd-like bands check this band:

It's a tribute album to PF band from my town and they used lots of vintage instruments and effects, some of them in common to what Floyd used back then Thumbs Up

Thanks MD - I'm very happy you enjoyed the music! I noticed the music I selected was leaning toward Floyd again this week but decided to leave it that way.

Unitopia are worth checking out - their final CD, the "covers" album, is on Bandcamp along with their live album so you can check out more of them if you want.

Right now I am listening to the Soundcloud you recommended - loving it! A good recommendation, thank you. I will be heading off to bed soon though - half past midnight here in Adelaide now.

What an epic show yesterday, too many great classics to mention. I really liked that Sebastian Hardie track, I have to listen to his albums... I think I already said it once Big smile

You said that Waters excepcionally sang on that live track but he's the one who sings on the studio version, although he does sound more like Gilmour on that one Ermm

By the way, I listened to the four Unitopia albums and they are really good, especially the last two Thumbs Up

Thanks MD - I'm glad you liked the show! The set of "epics" was fun to put together -and quick too - I'm grateful for that in a week when my day job has been busy.  Incidentally, "Sebastian Hardie" the band doesn't actually feature a person called "Sebastian Hardie" - I've no idea exactly why the chose the name (I did a quick web search just then). If you're interested, there's an interesting interview with guitarist Mario Millo http://www.progressor.net/interview/mario_millo.html" rel="nofollow - here .

Embarrassed Oops! I'll have to listen to the studio version again - maybe Roger just sounds more "Roger-like" on the live version then...That's my excuse... Roger's singing on that still sounds weird to me though, I'm so used to the studio version.

Excellent! Yes, a shame that band has split up now. Oddly enough, as far as I know, Unitopia did hardly any gigs here in Adelaide - the last Unitopia gig was in 2011 I think, before I'd even heard about them! It's both funny and sad to think they were relatively popular in Europe - enough to get a deal with Inside Out - but little known here in Adelaide, their home town.

Thanks for that interview, so the origin of the name was something like Sgt. Peppers then. I found interesting that he mentioned the lack of money and venues to why they broke up and they would have more scope in Europe and here prog bands say the same only changing to "anywhere else in Europe" Ermm

Yeah, I know what you mean, he sounds like the crazy The Wall Roger I know and hate Tongue

From what I've been told, the band members formed United Progressive Fraternity after that, although they only played on "the other Europe" so far. Their album is on Progstreaming by the way.

I know most of those songs, I think I'm covered :P
Probably my favourites from those are PF obviously, Robert Reed because I know every bit of Oldfield's classic albums, so another one is welcome, and Hibernal is simply amazing. :)
I think it was a very good year for RPI though.

I think the most obvious is the latest Logos album although my favourite is between Ad Maiora's self-titled and Syndone's Odysseas, both amazing albums.

Yes, they only put out two albums - worth a listen if you are not put off by their rather stiff singer, or even if you are - the music itself is really quite melodic and something different considering the rest of the Australian scene at the time and the general lack of bands ploughing the prog rock furrow. Both the Rainbow Theatre albums ( http://www.aztecrecords.com.au/products/avscd019" rel="nofollow - The Armada , http://www.aztecrecords.com.au/products/avscd011" rel="nofollow - Fantasy Of Horses ) have been released on CD by Aztec Music who did a great job - remastered and with really informative CD notes that throw a lot of light onto the band and their recordings

Thanks MD! It's always interesting to put together a program of exclusively Australian music, given that the musical styles range from the "head music" of the early '70's through to the heavy/technical/djent bands that make up so much of the "progressive rock" scene here in Australia these days; the typical "old school" symphonic prog style is rather rare here.

Ben Craven has put out some great music and I'm looking forward to his new album. His first solo album came out on vinyl too - and I can testify that the Roger Dean artwork he commissioned looks terrific full size!  I probably prefer Cybotron's earlier releases over the Implosion album, their earlier music does stretch out a bt more -  but sadly Implosion is the only one I have on CD. Black Devil's Triangle is a good track, lots of those great retro synth sounds, and the bonus tracks on the reissue are also very good!

^^ I celebrated your holiday by listening to only Australian albums I wanted to check: that Ben Craven album, the first from Rainbow Theatre, Four Moments and Blueprint from Sebastian Hardie and the album from UPF. Every one of them is amazing Big smile
I saw that Ben Craven LP, but the shipping costs from Australia are frightening Stern Smile I already have many LP size Roger Dean artwork to look at though Wink

^That seems promissing! I listened to Phaedra last week, it's the only TD LP I have so far. I'm interested to hear that Renaissance recent concert, since I'll probably see them in a few months Smile

Smile Glad to hear that MD - yes, we have some talent here in Australia, it's just not very thick on the ground. I have the UPF CD now too, will play a little more from it in future.

Too true! Them vinyl record things are both bulky and fragile, a bad combination for freight purposes really and yes I wouldn't refcommend freight from Australia to Europe. Ben's LP is a thing of beauty though...Smile

I've not got much TD either - I find the reviews here on PA are a good starting point as to what to acquire since TD put out so many albums!  Wacko

Thanks MD!  The Ozrics are never far away from the program;  Nektar tend to get picked less often, but along with Camel they were one of the first bands I got into when I borrowed a cassette tape of "Remember The Future" from a public library here in Adelaide.

Cool!  Yes, I hope that http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=20870" rel="nofollow - Colossus, the second album by Cybotron , gets a legitimate reissue sometime, to complete the availability of the Cybotron legacy.

The live album by Cybotron ( http://www.dual-planet.com/news/category/cybotron/2" rel="nofollow - Sunday Night At The Total Theatre ) has also been reissued and I will be chasing that up sometime...

However, I found http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=20868" rel="nofollow - Monster Planet , the solo album by Steve Maxwell von Braund to be a tough listen though, it's pretty difficult to fit into the Saturday night schedule...

I'm still getting the better known Electronic albums like TD, so it's not on the top of the wishlist, but I sure will keep those albums in mind Wink

Yeah, most Electronic music is certainly not easy to play on radio: last time you played Phaedra I had to stop it because I help my mother on her store on saturday mornings, so I play your program there and it was spooking the customers LOL

I didn't know Steeleye Span, Slapp Happy and Split Enz, I'll have to listen to some of their albums Smile

Yeah, most Electronic music is certainly not easy to play on radio: last time you played Phaedra I had to stop it because I help my mother on her store on saturday mornings, so I play your program there and it was spooking the customers LOL

LOL
Yes, a little electronic music goes a long way sometimes, that's why I tend to include it carefully and sparingly.  That's all part of the challenge of compiling a program though...

The reviews and ratings here on PA are a reliable guide to all three of these bands, especially Split Enz: the first two albums by Split Enz show their early influences by mainstream prog and art rock, the later albums less so, but I love most of them. PA should have a sub-genre called Quirky Prog I reckon - perfect for the Enz.

The True Colours album was a massive hit here in Australia along with a couple of hit singles and set up Split Enz as a major league band here. Just one of many great kiwi bands and musicians that crossed the Tasman from New Zealand to Oz and enriched our culture so much.

Hi there,

Thanks for listening MD - I think the name of the German band you want is http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1232" rel="nofollow - Pell Mell - I played a song from their album " http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=6150" rel="nofollow - From The New World ".

Yes, I like http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=14054" rel="nofollow - that Threshold album too - I had some earlier Threshold albums that I wasn't keen on at the time I got them, so their 2007 "Dead Reckoning" album hasn't really had a fair listening from me until recently...

For last night I mainly picked music from bands that haven't got much (or any) airtime until now - quite a few always get left out of the programs for one reason or another, so it was a real "mixed bunch". But I ended up enjoying it too! A lot more music where that came from...

Smile

It's cool that you played something from the latest Oldfield album, that album rocks Tongue

Thanks MD, I'm glad you liked them.

Ticket are an interesting NZ band that had their 1st album re-released a few years ago here in Australia on http://www.aztecrecords.com.au/collections/aztec-music/products/avscd056" rel="nofollow - Aztec Records , I only got around to ordering it in recently (suggesting Aztec are good in keeping a backstock of their releases). The re-issue is a thing of beauty and replete with bonus tracks and really interesting info about the band and their life and times - it's a good listen though maybe not overtly/consistently "proggy" (the heavy guitar-based sound of last night's tracks is pretty typical). The band like so many others is long defunct of course.

Based on their Facebook page, Over Unity seem to be on ice at present which is a shame - the EP suggests they could have come up with some pretty interesting music if the band had kept going.

Yes, it's a great track isn't it. While preparing this program I was tossing up between AHM, Shine On and Echoes (my 3 favourite Floyd tracks) - the live version of "Shine On" was on last week's program so much as I love it I ruled that out; then, after I listened through AHM again to help me decide, I felt it deserved a place in the 200th program. Echoes will get airtime at some point in the future too but it's been played lots of times on SoC, AHM just once before now.
