Minstrel in the Gallery recently overcame A Passion Play as my favorite Jethro Tull album ever.

"Baker St. Muse" is the greatest song Jethro Tull ever crafted.

Hah! Didn't think of that.

If we're talking song I'd go with Minstrel, easily. The song that got me into Tull (and subsequently prog), and still my favourite Tull track.

Songs from the Wood does not have one bad track on it. This.

Minstrel contains Black Satin Dancer; some people like it, I dislike it lots. I also don't care too much for Baker St Muse....it promises everything, but just goes nowhere IMHO.

100% agreed.  Their magnum opus.  The flow of the album is superlative, as well.  I just wish the remaster didn't have a persistent high-pitch whine (think 19+ kHz) throughout.  Mastering engineer probably couldn't hear that frequency.

Minstrel by far for me; the perfect JT IMO. I like Songs as well, but at times a little too cheery for me lol.

Good grief. I think it's a mess. Promises much, but goes nowhere and fails abysmally to deliver. The lowest point of the album.

Specified in the original post.      My vote goes for Songs, arguably my favorite Tull. Minstrel in turn is merely in my top ten.

Both great albums, but SftW wins by a notch. Love them both.

SFTW & TOTRTYTD are the best pair of LPs by JT (imo)

I am surprised that the folk-leanings of SFTW is beating the more proggy -leanings of MITG.

Love 'em both mind...

Songs is pretty good. While Minstrel is tulls weakest session of the 70s IMO.
I'll rank the tull years from the 70s:

1971-aqualung 40 year double cd release
1972-TAAB
1978-horses remaster
1974-warchild remaster
1970-benefit remaster
1979-stormwatch remaster
1977-songs remaster
1973-APP
1976-too old remaster
1975-minstrel remaster

-------------
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Variety is the spice of life. APP and MITG would be two of my top three Tull albums along with TAAB.

I wonder how many others would put Too old To Rock and Roll above MITG. That is why I find these polls/lists so fascinating - to see the differences we all have!

Songs from the Wood, I'm afraid. 'Gallery kind of just laid there like a pretty girl while Songs' at least jumped up out of the record grooves here and there. More of a polished production, to boot.

I can't pick on this one. My joke name for Minstrel is the Menstrual In The Gallery. But seriously, I like them both about the same.

Actually I'm not surprised. SFTW is very complicated but accessible, so I thought that it would go over better than Minstrel, but you're right, just not this much.
