Subject: Best Synth Solo In a Prog Song!
Date Posted: September 23 2014 at 15:07
In a recent discussion about the origins of the Synthesizer, I started to think of some great synth solos and passages in Prog songs like Emerson's coda to ELP's Lucky Man. What are some of your favorite solos or stand out sections of Synths in a Prog song?

Camel - "Rainbow's End" ... if one can call it a solo, more than just an intro/outro. At least one of the best.

Figure di Cartone by Le Orme. The mini-moog at its best. At least I believe it is a mini-moog. It could be a regular moog. Or a giant one.

My favourite keyboard solos generally feature organ or piano, but a few came to mind: Greenslade - Catalan Yes - Revealing Science of God ELP - From the Beginning ELP - Trilogy Tarot Woman by Rainbow, although as above more an intro than a solo

The live version of "Aquatarkus" from ELP's "Welcome back my friends..." (not the studio version though).

Great list, particularly Catalan. Wish I'd thought of that first!

Kit Watkins and Jan Schelhaas dueling synth solos on the driving "Wait", from Camel's "I Can See Your House From Here" album.

Thanks Chopper! I've never worked out who did that great solo on Catalan - Dave Greenslade or Dave Lawson, though I think it might be Lawson.

There are several throughout Genesis' Lamb'. The "synth" work on that album is among Mr. Banks' best.

I'd say Genesis - "The Cinema Show" "Revealing Science of God" and "Lucky Man" are good picks too. Anything by Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson fits.

Their best. If only Styx could have kept up that momentum and come up with more that was similar.

Moraz's Minimoog work on "Relayer" gets my vote. His solo on "Sound Chaser" is a classic.

Even better is the synth solo on "Crystal Ball"!
See, I played for a Styx tribute band for a year and while both Crystal Ball and Come Sail Away are good solos, I'd take 'Foolin Yourself' over either of those two.
Ultimately though, my vote goes for the solo in 'Cinema Show' Utterly beautiful, every note is just about perfect. Second place would be 'In the Cage'

Haha I just remembered, the "In the Cage" solo was inspired by the song I just posted "Runaway" by Del Shannon. That's why Gabriel sings "My little runaway!" right before it starts.

By our domestic, ex-Yugoslavian progressive rock at the time of analog synthesizers, I choosed this instrumental track which is composed & fantastic Minimoog solo played by Skopje's Classical Music Academy graduated (violoncello) Mr Petkovski, now based in Canada where he works as a professional musician:

I tried to pick something unusual for this....
FAILED.
Has to be the Cinema Show solo.
It's a perfectly composed solo. The different sounds used by Banks, the build up in tension. AMAZING
