As an experiment, Thom Yorke is releasing an album, entitled Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, to be released via a "new version of BitTorrent" with a paygate. It's apparently an experiment that, if successful, could show a way that artists can have more control over filesharing.

Also, the new single is pretty nice. Thom Yorke is really showing his age in the video!

Anyways, thoughts?

Anything that tries to fix the broken system of music distribution is a welcome change in my view.    I don't know if it'll catch on or not, but I applaud him for the effort. It's a step in the right direction.

Radio Head was the first band I remember using the "name your price" concept, and that seemed to get a nice reception too.

I think it makes sense financially.  Cheap digital copy that bypasses any third party, and an expensive special edition vinyl.  The digital copy is $6 and the vinyl is $50.  From what I've read about music revenue and whatnot, this may be a winning model.  I personally love the peer-to-peer aspect. Free internets ftw.

This is a very important topic.

Why is it in the General Music discussions?

Thom Yorke is listed in PA as Crossover Prog.

So shouldn't this topic be in the Prog section?

It's Sunday night in Oz and I have nothing to do.
