Have to go for 10cc, not a huge fan of ELO. "The Dean and I" is enough on its own to beat ELO.

10cc, at least up to Deceptive Bends.  How Dare you is one of my all-time favourite albums, a terrific combination of musical creativity, artiness and humour.

Definitely 10cc here, Sheet Music is an amazing record.

Anyone who enjoys 10cc should check out Godley & Creme solo album called "L". It's much more experimental and weird but still excellent all the way.

I love both bands - both deserve more attention on here.

Sheet Music is one of the great art rock/prog albums and Time is also excellent.

Love both bands, but I have to go with ELO. IMO, they have more great albums. 10CC only have a couple great albums IMO. Also, 10CC's first couple of albums were too silly for me:)

Sorry, but ELO is the most Beatles sounding band after Klatuu. Perhaps they should have been in the question, too.

10CC were a much more interesting and musically varied band compared to ELO who stuck to a very familiar sound and style. However 10CC could never touch ELO at their best imo.Clever arty pop group versus heavyweight seventies stadium band? I think I vote for the latter.

I love'm both but I can listen to EARLY 10cc and not skip a track.  ELO usually causes a tendency to skip around.

Don't Hang Up   and  Feel the Benefit are incredible tracks.

10cc were a proficient little group of musicians who sounded good, penned clever lyrics, and could bring out a chuckle on repeated listenings. ELO, although very talented, were mired in the '70s with their "orchestra" gimmick and too busy, wall-to-wall sound that eventually grew tiresome (refreshing though was the use of Livin' Thing at the end of the film Boogie Nights). Thank goodness 10cc never unleashed upon the world a Don't Bring Me Down or music for the likes of Xanadu.

Nice, different poll.
Going with 10cc. I used to like ELO a great deal, then a friend lent me some CDs a few years ago and found that much of it wasn't sitting with me so well anymore. 10cc on the other hand keep getting better to my ears.

Nothing I've heard from 10CC ever tickled my fancy (way to pop sounding) but ELO are quite fine.

Livin' Thing is my fave ELO song too.

Did you see the Jeff Lynn documentary on BBC4 on Friday followed by a recent Hyde Park concert?

Missed it although I could probably still get it via Sky's On Demand service. Thanks for the heads up.

Reggae isn't my beach, on the other hand there are about 20 ELO songs that I like though knowing I guess only half of their albums so far. But Xanadu with Olivia Newton John is a much better version for me, it still brings me very good feelings.

10cc is not a reagge band Confused, they have probably one pastiche "reagge" parody song, most if it is theater and flimsy musical pieces.

^Ops... that was really a big misunderstanding of mine of what was written by Blacksword about them (cod reggae) - also a silly error assuming that... Confused, this time I'm gonna sleep earlier this night Icarium.  Ouch

not a fan of either, with both being too smarmy for me, but 10CC gets a slight edge for not recycling silly violin riffs over and over.

Seriously, I heard the song 'Art For Art's Sake' today at work, and save for a slightly Floydian-atmospheric Iinterlude, the song is just another by-the-numbers pop song.......
.......non-offensive but nowhere near Prog in my opinion.......

Too complex to be by-the-numbers

Yeah, have to admit, two good songs there. Though "A New World Record" is more of a collection of pop singles than a cohesive body of work.

Too complex to be by-the-numbers
when I hear a tune - albeit, the 'popular' tunes, nothing strikes me as 'complex'.......
I must be missing something here........???

It's in the structure. 10cc during their prime years would write quite a lot more sections into their pop songs than most, hence the art pop and progressive pop tags they're often given. Art For Arts Sake is one of their more straight-up songs from that period, but still a bit more compositionally restless than the average pop-rock. Check out "Iceberg" that Icarium posted in this thread.
