3 stars Since Thomas Englund discovered his vocal abilities go beyond dark baritone croon about alien abductions and doomsday cults towards an anthemic emotional experience, Evergrey has joined the burgeoning ranks of radio-friendly prog-lite metal bands. Rarely has a title like Hymns for the Broken reflect the songs on the album. This is music for the depressed, but not the kind that hunker down, rather those who want to scream out loud about their emotions. Hymns are lush enough for goth teen radio, yet retain the riffing and metal sensibility to make sure that some of the listeners are boys with long hair. And you know what? Some of these songs are not half bad. Like Barricades with its blues-styled solo break, brooding Black Undertow or King of Errors and Archaic Rage (which is actually quite lush) with their melodic change-ups. Others, however, are more bland.
