4 stars This 1983 album was Peter Gabriel's 6th studio effort as a solo artist, and his most commercially successful album to that date. This album marks the beginning of a new era for Peter Gabriel, an era of increased confidence and ultimately, musical control. This is evident from the album opener "Red Rain", which shows Gabriel's recently cultivated love of African music, with it's tribal sounding percussion section and acrobatic vocals from Gabriel. The album's second track "Sledgehammer" has a very different feel to it. A massive hit at the time (assisted by it's award winning music video), this is an almost funky 80's pop songs with heavy emphasis on the guitar and horns section throughout. The songs lyrics also show shades of Gabriel's sexual eccentricity which has made him so infamous since as far back as the early 1970's. The third track, is the tearjerking "Don't Give Up", a duet sang with Kate Bush, another excellent crossover-prog artist of the time. Other songs to look out for are "Big Time Success", which show Gabriel's liberal political views, and the album finale "This Is The Picture", whcih really does the album justice. A very good album, and a common feature in your Average Joe's record collection. 4 stars.
