Like a prog band doing pop, it usually doesn't work. This album is kind of like when Gentle Giant tries to do Pop Rock, but Van Der Graaf doing Psychedelia? This is a very strange album indeed, probably the most different of the entire VDGG catalog. Most of these songs sound like if Van Der Graaf was trying to write Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, it's a very odd experience. I do like this album but it's definitely not a great Van Der Graaf Generator record by any means. If you want a good introduction to the band, the best album to start off with is 'The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other', it's a strong album but it's definitely lighter Van Der Graaf. This is a very quirky and weird album, good yet not essential.
