4 stars Rush's 2112 is a excellent album and definitely a essential album in any prog rock collection. This is really all thanks to the first song on the track 2112 Overture. 2112 Overture tells the story of a distant future society where creativity and self expression is outlawed. And our protagonist stumbles upon a guitar in a cave. He then takes his new found discovery to the priests who rule. And they tell him that the guitar is a waste of time and a danger to there modern society. And this dwells on him and drives him to suicide. The song outlines the importance of freedom and self expression, as a lot of rush songs do. This epic 20 minute track instantly makes the album a masterpiece. However I do have one complaint. The expectations that this song sets is too high to make the rest of the album as enjoyable. and it personally left me bored. So if I were to listen to this album again I would start on the back side. 4/5
