5 stars Well, I really don't know why Signifys rating isn't as high as the rest of there early output. To me this is my favorite release from Porcupine Tree with Maitland as drummer. Part of it is because of the albums concept, which is about trying to grasp significance. Something we all do as humans, something we also tend to fail at. The music is brilliant as well, with great beats, and spacey soundscapes throughout. Richard Barbieris presence is very strong on this one. He manages to provide a perfect background for the vocals, and he carries the instrumental songs perfectly. Speaking of vocals, Wilson is stunning here. Sever is a good example on just how talented he is as a singer, and lyrically I believe that this is his strongest output. The best thing for me is just how well the album flows from beginning to end, if that makes sense. All the songs feel like they're in the right place, and when listened as a whole, seems very much stronger. The instrumentals, the segs, everything fits perfectly. Of course, the real highlight of the album is the perfect trance like closer, Dark Matter. A good song to think to, and look back at the album in retrospect. The culmination, of course being about the insignificant thing which is our lives as humans. To quote "This has become a full time career, to die young would take only 21 years". Brilliant. Great album from when Porcupine Tree was more of a phsycadelic band, and less of a metal band.
