The "Dominion" demo is the second of three demo EPs issued by Dutch band Sun Caged, prior to the release of their first official album. This four track EP finds the band developing their sound, while still bearing a striking resemblance to DREAM THEATER. That similarity, while undeniable is however not ever present.

The opening track "Curiosity kills" is a good example of this, in that the track starts out with double paced drums and searing guitar licks, but midway through we have a brief jazz based piano section before the metallic rhythms return. The vocals of Sascha Burchardt also prolong the Dream Theater comparison, but he does have a good voice and a confident delivery. He would not however remain with the band long enough to appear on their maiden album.

"Four guilders" is a metal improvisation with more fast guitar licks, but a generally less structured feel. This track became a bonus track on the Japanese version of their album.

"Sides" opens with some atmospheric keyboard refrains and ethereal guitar, before a more orthodox beat takes over. The track is a slower metal ballad, the IRON MAIDEN/ SYMPHONY X influences being a bit too generic to give the track any real uniqueness. Good stuff though, with some fine symphonic keyboard backing.

The final track, "The escape", is a slightly offbeat piece, with a strong melody and at times a pop rock feel.

For a demo, "Dominion" is a remarkably assured and competent offering. It certainly shows "Sun Caged" to be a band of significant potential. The tracks are currently available for download at the band's website, via the link from their page on this site.
