5 stars 1974 was a strong year for Duke, releasing his 2 fusion highlight albums. This one misses Zappa but on the other hand, has to boast a very tight trio playing consisting of Chancler, Heard and the keyboard master himself. Chancler is in a top shape, relentlessly storming the drums, providing sense of rhythm, constant development but able to turn down the volume, too. Duke flourishing on the keyboard and some moments easily match the best fusion acts, if not in terms of complexity (3 instruments only), then in terms of playing and surpassing them on the level of genuine emotions. Duke puts a lot of heart inside synths and electric piano, in particular is incredibly effective. Latin beats meet fusion and funky territory without sacrificing any quality. The intensity can get touch skies, such as on the first first-class modestly titled "The opening". Just listen to the Chancler drumming that acts like a bird let fly loose. This is a demonstration of the best of the best of fusion. If you have the remastered CD or flac quality, the sound and intensity will take your breath away. This is one of the masterpieces of latin/funk inspired accessible fusion not diminished by the weaker atmospheric track "North beach".
