Seer's Tear Progressive Metal

Review by toroddfuglesteg

4 stars I did a review of this album back in 1998 when I got the promo CD from Goldtrack Records. My idea was to cut and paste that review over to ProgArchives. Then I put on this album for old time's sake and my plans was scrapped.......... I have come to a wholly different opinion about this thirteen years later.

Seer's Tear is one of these bands who did one album and then disappeared again. They have a Myspace account which has not been visisted or maintained since 2008. But I hope the individual members has continued with music somewhere else because they shows a heck of a lot promise on this album.

The band and the music is listed as Progressive Metal. That is about right. But there is a lot more to this band than just a Dream Theater copy. For a start, there is not much Dream Theater in this album at all. If any, that is. My thoughts goes more in the direction of Black Sabbath, Mordred, Faith No More and My Dying Bride (the 34.788%... complete album) in the metal scene....... and the likes of Smiths, Radiohead, Psychotic Waltz, King's X, Gentle Giant and Cathedral (Us) in the prog rock scene.

The metal parts is what this album starts with. The first two songs is metal songs. Though with a lot of added eclectic prog elements. The true star on this album is the five minutes long Pressures. A song Gentle Giant would had been proud of. The rest of the album is a mix of twisted takes on metal and eclectic prog.

In short; this album is a small gemstone of an album and it is a great shame that they were met with a cold shoulder when they were alive. I gave them two out of six stars back in 1998. I am glad I did not use the cut and paste method this time and really sat down with this album. My verdict this time is four stars. I think it is one of the few Prog Metal albums outside Dream Theater worthy of my attention. Nuff said.

4 stars
