3 stars Nirvana's 1971 release, "Local Anaesthetic," is a departure from their typical sound, displaying a remarkable progression in their musical exploration. With just two tracks, "Modus Operandi (Method of Work)" and "Home," both of epic proportions, the album takes listeners on a journey through uncharted musical territories for the band.

The album's complex and entrancing soundscapes reflect the band's creativity here and their eagerness to break new ground. "Modus Operandi" is an experimental sonic voyage consisting of an array of influences, while 'Home' encapsulates more of what Nirvana is known for, it takes their signature style into a lengthy multi-section epic.

"Local Anaesthetic" remains an underappreciated gem in the band's catalog, and one can't help but wonder what might have been had Nirvana continued to explore this progressive path. It's a testament to their versatility and a unique chapter in their musical legacy.
