4 stars Bought this album about a year after its release(still have it) because of its cool looking cover. Some may not admit to this method of buying new music, but back in 1970/71, we had no computers or internet to guide us. Most albums like Argus or Love It to Death, cool jackets parleyed into cool music. King Crimson's first lp amazed me. Cannot say I was hooked, but this album opens with one of the most gut-grabbing song's ever. I agree with some, that the music at times left me thinking a lot of dope was being smoked, or actual schizo music writing was taking place. But for the year it came out, it was progressive as hell, regardless of how tame it might be by today's standards.

Were there other bands playing music like this? Like the previous reviewer states, Pink Floyd was already at it. But their early music was, at times even more meandering than most early progressive rock. I have yet to buy a cd of this record, just bought a second album in the mid-70's when I picked up too much hiss on the 1st album. But, I have put it on my list of cd's to buy when I find it cheap. I loved to hear it with a super quiet background, especially on songs like, "I Talk To The Wind" and "Epitaph', two beautiful songs. Would I recommend this album? I would really have know someones taste. I listen to rockabilly, rock, hard rock, girrl rock, so yes I would recommend it to expands ones views of early progressive. rock.
