4 stars Listening diary 3rd October, 2021: Marillion - Brave (progressive rock, 1994)

I think a lot of my issues with H-era Marillion are here in microcosm - it's just too damn long. 71 minutes, for what is honestly about 25 minutes of good ideas. Those ideas, when they do blossom into longer passages, make for arguably the most compelling music they did post-1990, and I'd probably still lean towards calling this my favourite H album, flaws and all. By this point, the musical links to their early work had begun to fade almost entirely from view, instead embracing a softer, more passionate art rock style that would act as a precursor to britpop in a way. H is a great singer, in fact when he's on song he's miles better than Fish - but he never had the big man's knack for great melodies. That's really what lets this down - for every minute of solid material, there's another of meandering half-melodies which don't really say anything. Perhaps if it was half the length I'd be saying something else.
