Progressive Biography

My journey with music started at the age of 10 listening to local rock groups like Soda Stereo , Charly Garcia and La Renga , Virus. None of them were prog per se but I really enjoyed them in the time. Then at the age of 15 and thanks to the Rolling Stones Forty Licks I became aware that there was a whole world of music in English waiting to be discovered , then I heard the Doors and I was completely blown away by their music. The lyrics , the sound , and more important their weirdness was something I was craving. Some years later , I found out what that weirdnesss was... PROTO PROG!!
Then I started hearing all the mandatory bands you know , Led Zeppelin , Deep Purple , Black Sabbath , Velvet Underground , some Grunge , Pink Floyd etc.. no pure prog bands yet. Until... my father bought me a Yes compilation called THE ULTIMATE YES. Thanks god this was not your typical compilation , it featured 20 minute long tracks!! Up to that point in time I hated Yes due to the song Owner of a lonely heart. but one night I decided to give them a chance. The first track was Yours is no Disgrace the rest is history. I learnt that the music Yes played was called progressive rock so I started looking for similar artists , Genesis was the first , ELP then , I was going through prog 101! I also bought records of two weird band called King Crimson and an American composer called Frank Zappa. Their music was way too advanced and downright strange for me at the time so I left those records on the shelf.
A couple of years later I learnt that my country ( Argentina) may be from the Third World but when it comes to prog it belongs to the G7!! Artists like Spinetta and his bands , Aquelarre , Arco Iris , Sui Generis , Crucis , Alas taught me that in the 70 s prog was really strong in my country. Then I came to an hiatus and did not know what to hear until I was surfing on the net and got to PROGARCHIVES. The pandoras box was opened!!
I like to describe myself as an all around progger since I like music from all genres within this site , I also like standard jazz. My record collection increased exponentially thanks to this site and very few times I was dissapointed with a record I bought so kudos for Max and the guys that keep this site alive because is amazing!!
I compare music to a building and the stepping stones of my musical building would be (in no particular order)

Spinetta

Miles Davis

King Crimson

Led Zeppelin

Frank Zappa

Dreamtheather

The Soft Machine

My top 2 records are

1) Brain Salad Surgery by ELP

2) Third by the Soft Machine

The rest of the list may vary due to my different phases in life.
