Progressive Biography

My name is Michael Gandelman from Caracas, Venezuela, I am 18 years old and have been a prog addict for the last 5 years. I was introduced to prog by my father when I was about 3 years old and he used to play ELP and King Crimson to me when I would ask for rock, but never really payed much attention to prog...

When I turned 13 I bought a stereo and took some of my father's CDs to try it out. Those CD's were: Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King and ELP's Trilogy. I liked The Dark Side of the Moon but when I listened to In the Court of the Crimson King I was amazed, confused and could not believe my ears, so I listened to it over and over again until I became a King Crimson addict. Then, I picked Trilogy up and became the biggest ELP fan on earth!

After an entire week of repeatedly listening to those three albums I practically stole the rest of my father's prog collection and became a die-hard Yes fan with Relayer and Tales from Topographic Oceans. Then, I started to explore such bands as Genesis (initially attracted because I liked Phil Collins' pop stuff.... but eventually Collins' vocals didn't impress me as much as Peter Gabriel's), Camel, Jethro Tull, etc., and then I became a prog addict.

During my early days of prog exploration my father introduced me to the Israeli scene (Ktzat Acheret, Schlomo Gronich, Yoni Rechter, Sheshet, Tamouz, etc.) which I really cherish because of its unique style and nature.

From there I started to expand my collection with new favorites like (thanks to PA and Delicious Agony Prog Rock Radio): Gentle Giant, Matching Mole, Frank Zappa, Eloy, Spock's Beard (Neal Morse era), Ammon Duul, UK, Triana, Vytas Brenner, Tempano, Caravan, Brand X, Esperanto, Dun, etc.

Thanks to prog I also started to enjoy a more diverse array of genres such as:
*Classical: Bartok, Ginastera, Moussorgsky, Debussy, Bach, Stravinsky, Falla, Prokofiev, etc.
*Jazz: Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, etc.
*Classic rock: The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Cream, Jimmi Hendrix, etc.
*Electronic: Brian Eno, Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, etc.
(I know they are labeled as prog, but I didn't know that at the time...)

I host a Prog Radio Show at the best radio station on the internet: "Delicious Agony Prog Rock Radio" (http://deliciousagony.com/) - Michael's Sonic Kaleidoscope (Mondays 5pm EST with re-runs every Thursday 3pm EST)....
brief description of the show:
"Progressive Rock draws influences from a wide array of genres and styles. Join me to explore every aspect of Progressive Rock and all those types of music that formed our beloved genre in a show where anything can happen."
As host of the show I've had the honor of interviewing such artists as: Glass Hammer, Sibelius, Yugen, Jordan Rudess, Wobbler, Il Tempio delle Clessidre, District 97 and Felix Martin,- you can find the interviews at the Delicious Agony website at the Interviews section (I also plan to transcribe and post them at the forum)

And now I am a collaborator of the best Prog website on the web: Prog Archives! as member of the Eclectic Prog Team...

It is hard to decide a favorite album list (+ it is always changing) so I'll give you some of the most influential albums to me, which conform my Desert Island list:
1)ELP-Tarkus
2)KC-In The Court Of The Crimson King
3)Yes-Tales from Topographic Oceans
4)Genesis-Selling England by the Pound
5)Dave Brubeck-Time Out
