Hello. How are you. Welcome to what I believe is the best website on earth for progressive rock and other related music. You'll certainly have a good time here and learn new things if you're open-minded and willing to, shall we say, experiment. Hence, it is called "progressive" rock.

There's a whole explanation of "What's Prog?" on this website, so you could check that out, but if you're already here and don't feel like going there, it's about challenging commonly accepted notions of music and that industry. It is 100% definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Most of today's population can't take that. They want instant gratification in music. They want something with a beat, maybe something they can dance to, maybe something they can scream to. They don't want anything they have to think about.

But not you. You're different, aren't you? That's why you're here. So then understand this: I, as well as the rest of the Admin, Special Collaborators, and Prog Reviewers, are NOT here to tell you what you should think (even though some of them probably think that). We are here to tell you what WE think. Large, significant difference. Our opinions can certainly help you shape your own, but we don't want to instill our beliefs into your mind and then get angry if you dare to disagree with us. Just because I don't like an album, doesn't mean that you shouldn't either.

You may hate Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Well, I'll certainly disagree with you, seeing as they were the band that got me into prog back in freshman year of high school. Karn Evil 9 was the first song I heard from them, and ever since, I started a spiral not only into ELP, but all of prog, with bands like King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes, Supertramp, Kansas, Pink Floyd, and Genesis following, as well as MANY MANY MANY other more obscure bands and newer prog rock bands.

One huge recommendation I'll make (along with many others) is Renaissance. I've listened to them since I was young, before ELP, before I even knew about the word "prog." Of course, back then, I couldn't truly grasp the scope of their immense beauty. I liked the girl's voice, and the piano was cool. Now, of course, that opinion is slightly more mature. Now, I recognize them as one of the greatest bands of the 70s, and certainly the most underrated. Song Of Scheherazade is perhaps the most beautiful work of music this century. No joke.

Let's see... I think my main standpoint on things around here is this: you need to be open-minded. I stress this often. It's the only way to discover new things, things that may be amazing, things that may be terrible, things that might be OK, and things that may change your life and your view of the world. You never know what you're going to stumble upon while digging through the massive Archives at your disposal here. There are treasures, you can be sure of that. And while my treasures might be your garbage, there are treasures just the same.

I guess I stress this point most often with bands like The Mars Volta, a hugely controversial band here. At first, I wasn't the biggest fan of them. Sounded too punky for me. And, well, that opinion obviously changed; hence, my review of Frances the Mute. You can read it to see what I'm saying. At this point, I feel almost as if it's the best album of the new millenium, and perhaps in my top ten albums of all time. It just goes to show how you absolutely positively cannot judge a book by its cover here. It'll come back to bite you later on, I can guarantee that.

It's the mistake that happens all too often: a person will reject a band at first blush because of a past impression they've had of the band. The Mars Volta happens to be a perfect example of this.

As for MY tastes... If I were absolutely FORCED to pick my top 10 albums, I think it would go something like this, in no order at all: EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER - Brain Salad Surgery, KING CRIMSON - In The Court Of The Crimson King, JETHRO TULL - Thick As A Brick, YES - Yessongs, PINK FLOYD - Wish You Were Here, GENESIS - Foxtrot, DREAM THEATER - Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory, SIGUR RÓS - Ágætis Byrjun, THE MARS VOLTA - Frances The Mute...

Hmmm... spot 10 is tough. Perhaps Scheherazade and Other Stories? Perhaps SPOCK's BEARD's The Light? Who knows. You get the point. Come to the forum, too. It's fun over there, mainly because we all don't take each too seriously (at least for part of the time), which is how it should be. We're here to enjoy this wonderful music, not bicker over who is better. Sign up. It's free.
