Progressive Biography

I was born in 1955 at the ridiculously advanced age of 30 and have remained virtually unchanged ever since, apart from finally managing to grow a respectable beard after many disastrous tries.

I've been a prog fan for over 30 years, ever since hearing Noel Edmonds play Benedictus by Strawbs in 1972 on his radio show. This was my first exposure to music other than banal pop and, after buying Grave New World, I began to investigate other bands including Floyd, Genesis, Horslips, Focus, Camel, BJH, Yes, Wishbone Ash and Tull.

University in St Andrews added Gryphon, Druid, Caravan, Renaissance, Gentle Giant, Rush and Uriah Heep and many others to my listening and since then I have built up a collection of over 800 vinyls and 100 CDs. As well as prog, I listen to metal, hard rock and folk rock, particularly Scottish and Irish material. I have always had an affinity for bands that adapt traditional/classical material and give it a new life. My main discoveries through this site have been the wonderful Mostly Autumn and Riverside and Opeth. I read all reviews and regard this site as an invaluable resource.

I am a Physics teacher by profession and have lived near York, UK for 30 years. I have introduced many students to prog and have been delighted to see them playing it and sporting T shirts from my favourite bands. I have an 18 year old son who is training to be a professional bass player and says he hates prog but plays the bass line to Roundabout incessantly (and, very annoyingly, perfectly). I play cricket and collect Victorian postage stamps as a hobby and investment. My ambition is to find an album that both Hugues Chantraine and I like - fat chance - (only joking, boss!) and to live forever - so far so good.
