Progressive Biography

Date of birth: 6/October/1961

I was first introduced to progressive rock when my older brother (a forum member himself) exposed me to Yes, King Crimson, Procol Harum, Zappa and many others. I couldn't have been but 10 or 11 years old, but by then I'd already had the Beatles, Steppenwolf and many other bands to influence and build the base for more complex music. Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever forged my appreciation for virtuosity and instrumental music. Prog has always been lurking in the corners of my thoughts and is the music I return to for solace and contemplation. I was under the impression that my beloved Prog music had died, when I stumbled across this site. My eyes were opened to a genre reborn, complex and interesting music still survives amid the sappy pop and elevator Jazz of the masses. I have made it a point to search out new bands and not just relive the glory of the past masters. Hopefully I can share some insight and passion of my own.

My current CD collection ranges from 700 to 1000 discs, however only 450 are straight Progressive Rock and another 70 or so of Fusion/Jazz/Rock... which fit into the sub genre's of Prog.

My favourite progressive bands/artists include, but only scratch the surface:
U.K.
Echolyn
Emerson Lake and Palmer
Gentle Giant
Allan Holdsworth
IZZ
Pink Floyd
RPWL
Singularity
Lands End
Yes
Shaun Guerin

My favourite progressive albums include:
U.K. (U.K.)
Mei (Echolyn)
Close to the Edge (Yes)
Wish You Were Here (PF)
I Move & My River Flows (IZZ)
Octopus (Gentle Giant)
Secrets (Holdsworth)
Suffocating the Bloom (Echolyn)
Trilogy (ELP)
Too many to name, really....

Other comments: I'd like to expand the researchers interest in the newer, up-and-comers in the various sub-genre's of Proggressive Rock. Much has been said about the masters and we spend a lot of time in the past where Prog is considered, but the present has an incredible amount exciting new talent that needs a voice.
