My favorite "hits" compilation 8-track when I was a youngun.
![]() Tell me there's not some great tunes on here - even an alternate extended "Call Me." Ktel may have been "cheesy," but I was young enough to love and appreciate these albums. |

I'm not familiar with all of the songs there, but there are definitely some good ones on there. My parents bought me the 1982 K-Tel album "Blast Off" for Christmas. It was the first rock album that I ever owned. Before that, I had a few Elvis records and Chipmunk Punk.

I think a great many of we American teens may have started our rock journeys with Ktel and FM radio. Although, certainly we had our AM transistor radios and pop music stations before that. |

The list does make me feel nostalgic.
I love that the list starts off with Gary Numan. Although I prefer, say, M.E. off The Pleasure Principle, but that was not a hit like Cars and would not be what I would expect from that. I've been into Gary Numan music since the 70s. I also am still keen on things like The Knack's My Sharona (my brother had get the Knack on 8-track, and it's the first song I played on a jukeback at a beach-pub in Northern Queensland -- such a memorable time). I still very much like Blondie. Here's the list of songs https://hercsktelalbums.blogspot.com/2015/05/rock-80-1980.html I like the artists, although my personal choices would not be those hits. Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Great blog post Greg. I think there were different versions of Rock 80 too. I think there's a longer version with more songs, and I think there's a UK version with totally different artists. I think it was unique for dipping its toe into New Wave whereas other Ktels before and after it were safer, with pop-disco before and more straight pop-rock and rock later. |
