I'm sure not everyone here is a gamer, but even so, those people might be interested in some of the music the medium has to offer. Compared to movie scores, video game tracks tend to resemble actual songs, rather than being a mismash of musical parts that reflect whatever is occuring on screen.

Since in the old days the technology was very limited, it posed a high challenge to composers to create music that's not only enjoyable the first time around but can still be enjoyed as it loops infinitely until the level is completed or the boss is defeated.

I dont know weither "video game music" should be considered a genre or not, as it covers a wide variety of styles and moods. I do relate a lot of video game music with progressive rock though, as a lot of video game music from the 8 bit and 16 bit eras could get very complex and intricate and didn't have to follow basic "pop song" structure, perhaps because composers were often encouraged to push a systems sound capabilities to it's limits.

Just post videos of your favorite soundtracks.

Here's some of mine.

Solstice - 1990 - NES - Composed by TIm Follin

This has to be my favorite NES soundtrack. It's hard to believe a soundtrack like this was even possible for an 8 bit system. Also this guy is clearly a proghead. It's a great game too, pretty challenging puzzles, recommended for proggies and NES fans alike.

F Zero - 1991 - SNES - Composed by Yumiko Kameya and Naoto Ishida

This was the game that was intended to demonstrate the superior technological power the SNES system had over the Sega Genesis, and it succeeded. This is one of my favorite racing games, and this is a definitely a good example of how riveting, adrenaline pumping music enhances the gameplay experience.

Super Metroid - 1994 - SNES - Composed by Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano

Though here's an example of how ambience can work just as well, expecially for games like this that put more emphasis on atmosphere, problem solving and exploration than fast paced action.

Streets of Rage 2 - 1992 - Genesis - Composed by Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima

More advanced sound chips aren't everything though. The Sega Genesis had some incredible soundtracks in it's own right. Yuzo Koshiro's finest work was for this system with The Streets of Rage and Shinobi games. Koshiro took in a variety of influences but still always managed to have a sound of his own.

That's it for now but I have a lot more to cover.

The music from the Mega Man games is consistently excellent and quite varied.  I've actually heard human bands perform several of the pieces and it sounds amazing.

The music to Chrono Trigger is particularly memorable also.

Ditto Donkey Kong Country.  Again, I've heard live musicians play this music (the aquatic level theme got a jazz treatment- so smooth and so rich).

If you like video game music, this album may be of interest.

I LOVE Mega Man music, usually from the NES-era and the MMX games.

Just some of my favorites.  I don't really have room to put all of my favorites.  There's just too many! Smile

Too many blips and bloops in this thread.
Also, while I considered myself a gamer for some time, I have not played any of the games posted so far. Hm.

Yeah, i'm a retro gamer first and foremost. Many video games now go for the cinematic approach but I prefer the blips and bloops actually.

Two of my most anticipated games have had the best trailer music in...years.

There REALLY needs to be an Academy Award fro best original score in a video game.

Ditto.

I always loved the SMB3 arrangement of the Underworld theme, tacky techno drums n' all:

They were cheesy as f**k, but I also loved the soundtracks to the first couple of Sonic games:

Aaaaand finally:

I am an absolute die-hard retro gamer, I have more Nintendo games than any human ever should! Add to that the rest of my Nintendo collection (over 24 t-shirts, posters, boxes, magazines, etc) and you've just created my favorite thread!

Good to see Mega Man mentioned here, that's an absolute must for these forums lol.

I've been acquiring a massive amount of NES and SNES stuff lately, but my fave music would be:

Mega Man series (classix and X)
Castlevania series
+1 for Solstice reference!
Toe Jam and Earl Panic on Funkotron (Genesis)
Lightening Force (Genesis)
Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine (Genesis)
Super Street Fighter II Turbo

And these ones just never gets old no matter how many times I hear them:

ClapClapClap

Double post but worth it; I'm constantly telling my friends these exact words. I play SNES like it's 1991 all over again; I prefer GAMES not SIMULATIONS!

Let's not forget Final Fantasy, now

So many others - and of course available in Prog-Metal version in many cases if you listen to The Black Mages

It's a good thing that most modern games still aren't simulations.

Although I guess I shouldn't be complaining about blips and bloops when the game soundtrack I am posting sounds like Blade Runner.

I wish I was born in the future, I'm never going to leave the planet. :(

Oblivion probably has the best music I've heard in any video game.

I think he means how many modern games aspire for more realistic visuals and to be of "cinematic" quality.

I definitely prefer video games that live in a world of their own instead of trying to be either realistic (like many sports  games) or like a movie. Not that those can't make for great video games. It's just a matter of preference.

There are still plenty of games that appeal to the tastes of me and other retro gamers. We should all be happy that the video game market is as diverse as it is.

Some great choices so far. I was going to post a video of Contra but I see somebody beat me to it. In fact most Konami and Capcom games have great music, that's one thing they're very consistant about, though their games are rarely less than awesome as well. Also props to the guy who posted the SNES Power Rangers level 1 theme. Shame I only had the lousy Genesis version as a kid. :(

Also, the Kefka theme sounds VERY prog.

Anyway. Some more favorites.

Super Castlevania IV - 1991 - SNES - Composed by Masanori Adachi and Sotaro Tojima

Some people criticized the music in this game for being "too ambient", I don't know what the f*ck those people are smoking. Castlevania always has great music but this is my favorite in the series.

Rocket Knight Adventures - 1993 - Genesis - Composed by Masanori Oouchi, Hiroshi Kobayashi, Masanori Adachi, Aki Hata and Michiru Yamane

This is one of those games only retro gamers seem to know, argubly the best non-Sonic platformer on the Genesis.

But speaking of Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - 1994 - Genesis - Composed by Jun Senoue, Tetsuyuki Maeda, Masaru Setsumaru, Tomonori Sawada, Masayuki Nagao, Sachio Ogawa and Howard Drossin

I STRONGLY disagree with those who say Sonic 3's soundtrack is weaker than the first two games. Gamers are just notorious for never accepting changes in their beloved series.

Revenge of Shinobi - 1989 - Genesis - Composed by Yuzo Koshiro

Another great soundtrack from Koshiro, I'll be posting his stuff often.

I'm just glad to see that I'm not the only one who loves video game soundtracks!  Quite a relief!
