Ah, yes, I remember! And actually, I recently bought that album, got it in my last order with Greg Walker a month or two ago! Haven't listened to it yet though!

On my second spin of Avenoth right now and it sounds better than the first, although I still would prefer a more erm subtle production.

So glad to hear it--it's such a fertile, diverse field that there will be something for every progressive fan if they keep looking.

Heh! I've had the experience of a band (that shall remain anonymous, and no, they weren't an Italian band so there was no `language barrier' issues! ) that I mentioned I posted a very positive review of their latest album to (when there were pretty much NO reviews of it anywhere), they never acknowledged my message, not even a single word `thanks', but then proceeded over the next year and a bit to use part of my review in a lot of their promotion, quotes, press, etc. It started popping up all over the net. I'll admit, I was a little steamed about that one!

^ So many rarely discussed gems! What an incredibly rich scene.

Here's another most would consider third tier (definitions-- first tier: under the radar for the general prog enthusiast--the big names like Banco, PFM, etc; second tier: way under the radar--Procession, RRR, etc; third tier: way way under the radar--hundreds, like Panseri and Gianinni)

Edit: I love how they use Jim's review on the Mellow Bandcamp page without giving any credit!

Pulled this minor gem off the shelf today, nice soft-prog album with flute and acoustic.  Nothing earth shattering but good quality.

Sorry to hear that about Maxophone, Samuel. I bought recently the Vinyl of YS (BTF 2014) Great pressing and sound.

We need a thread on vinyls pressings here. It's urgent !!!!

^ I bet that's the King version of Zarathustra--I do love the sound of that one! Best I've heard, and I've tried lots!

The bonus tracks on the Maxophone Mellow (and BTF reissue) are the 1977 single with Il Fischio del Vapore as the A-side (which is great) and Cono di Gelato as the B-side (which is not).

^ I got other vinyl reissues from Vinyl Magic, and they don't sound nearly as bad as that one, although I think "Storia di un Minuto" is the best reissue I have on vinyl. I think the best sounding classic RPI album I have is a cheap Japanese CD of "Zarathustra" though Thumbs Up
I'll have to be cautious when investing on LP's from now on (I'm not happy with Black Widow's either Ermm).

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for either of those (I don't really care for bonus tracks Tongue).

^^ Pierre, I love that Matteo album! Clap

^ Samuel, I think this is a far too common problem. In haste to cash in on the vinyl resurgence, too many companies are reissuing these vinyls with no thought put into the sources. And people are buying them unawares, thinking that just because it's on vinyl that the sound will be warm and natural as on the original issues. So very frustrating to have to sort through so many issues to find that sound, especially when RPI original vinyls are so rare and expensive. A friend whom I trust told me that the second issue editions in the late 70s have the same great sound as the originals but are less expensive, for what it's worth.

Also, regarding that Maxophone album, if you like the warm natural sound of the original vinyl, the best CD version to have is the Mellow CD. The King CD has the same sound but doesn't have the bonus tracks. The AMS/BTF gatefold issue doesn't sound as good, being mastered and tweaked.

Anyone else got AMS's vinyl reissue of Maxophone? Terrible source/mastering/pressing, I could have bought it on CD for half the price with better quality Disapprove
