RUSH — 2112

Review by Kaji-cheempo (The Kaj)

4 stars Before this album, Rush was a band fit to be listened to only by Dungeons and Dragons enthusiasts. With the release of 2112, they proved that they were capable of producing an album that was only on one side for Wizards and Knomes. The other side: Unadulterated Magic. I'm not talking about sorcery here. No, listening to side one of 2112 is like basking in the glory on an illuminating,uh, luminous device. Rush would after this album continue to rock for some time. Then tragically, they ceased rocking. In my opinion, the album is the song "2112". The rest of the material on this album concerns warlocks or tears or something. Oh, and they have an ode to marijuana. When Rush began to smoke marijuana they became too lazy to play Dungeons and Dragons, but since their instruments were close by, they just got really good at them.

Drugs are bad, m'kay?

That ones hillarious!

That was actually my review!!!, yep I screwedDead up the score I should have given it 4 stars, I just couldn't bring myself to with the awesome sleeve desogn. If there is some way I can change it I'll give it the rightly give it 4 stars. Its the second review I have given on this website so of course I mess up the score, but I stand by the rest of the review.

I don't think you should change it! Some people give that album 1 star out of spite so your 5 star review balances those out.Big smile

3 stars MAD DISC!

Certainly that like gift of Christmas the readers of NME are not able to have better. I do not know how many copies in more with respect the usual one were sold in more but I should say that this is an excellent gift.

Certainly "Brain Salad Surgery" is a piece aged well! I believe that in the homonymous album there it was well. "Excerpts From Brain Salad Surgery" is instead a mix that is not aged well...

But thing want to do us, for what farewell... It stays, still today, a good tape for manipulation exercises.

Like gift is a gift that would do happy everything.

For always yours, Mandrakeroot

Beautiful poetry. Anyone want to write music for this?LOL

This album is crap. I don't intend to demean on the efforts of the musicians to create this album. But honestly, by any definition of even mainstream rock, you'd better buy any LED ZEPPELIN album, I think, than to buy this CD. As a fan of Lucifer's Friend, I cannot accept the quality of music this band produces for this album. What do you think? - Gatot Widayanto, Indonesia.

Why did I have to post it? Because I think it is the first time I've ever come across a negative review by Gatot. He is by far the most positive reviewer on the site. Read his many reviews, they almost invariably find something good to say about the album.Clap

So if he doesn't like it...it really must be crap!

PROG REVIEWER
1 stars  —  This is one repeatedly overated band who, along with the likes of the rolling stones should have packed it in years ago. The last time I listened to this band was when I was in high school. For eggheads only.

I guess I'm an egghead!

[QUOTE=James Lee]

How about a thread of some of the more unique contributions to the reviews? While I don't necessarily want to single people out for ridicule, I think some really fascinatingly mystifying points of view have been submitted. Humor (intentional or unintentional), bizarre observations, or just plain missing the point entirely would be good criteria. Even some of the more warped web-translations would work (I, for one, have come to look forward to andrea salvador's submissions). "

Providing it has more than five words,  e.g. not "this rocks", or "this sucks", any review is good as the person took time to inform others.

In other websites, I only click on "yes" "was this review helpful to you" section and ignore the "no" part as it is too often used by people who don't like opinions who differ from themselves (people are only human)

EMERSON LAKE & PALMER (ELP) Brain Salad Surgery
5 stars
by bdchappie

The first track Jerusalem is a cover of old hymn with lyrics written by the great english poet William Blake. ELP treat this song with the respect it deserves while adding much needed life and a great level of emotion putting it on a new level. The hymn is strange start to an album with a sleeve that looks like it came straight out of hades. 8.5/10

Toccata, the albums masterpiece and one of my personal favourite song of all times. It starts of with quiet trumpets which decieves the listener with what lies ahead. Then with crashing passion comes the keyboards, drum and bass, with such agression and intense passion. When the keyboards are finished their thrashing, a drum solo by Carl Palmer finishes off the first "movement" of the song, then rumbling percussives noices of Palmer, and a windy sound effect take your emagination to outside the colleseum of ancient Rome ELP have taken you with this song to genre of program music, Greg Lake's bass plays and give the impression of a sneaking shadow in the vicinty an alarm is sounded with even more agression the musicians play strange experimental noises, and at a heightened climax of music we are taken back to the first "movement", and then the song ends leaving your mind blown away. I have never heard a more savagely intense song as this one. 10/10

Still...you turn me on and Benny the bouncer are two short tracks I treat as fillers, Still... is more a typical love ballad, for the ladies and most likely a single. Benny the bouncer is humorous piece about a bar fight, int the same vein as Harold the Barrel or the Battle of Epping Forest by Genesis, albeit not as good; although I know some people who like it. 6.5/10 each

Karn Evil 9:

1st Impression parts one and two ; although I think this piece is a little dated, it still has some amazing solos by ELP, their trademark energy, and has the famous lines "WELCOME BACK MY FRIENDS TO THE SHOW THAT NEVER ENDS", I listen to this piece quite regulary 7.5/10

2nd Impression is mostly a traditional jazz piano with influences of Coltrane etc on it. Has a bit of ragtime in it as well, great for widening your appreciation to more traditional jazz pieces. 7/10

3rd Impression Is a great piece with some very fascinating inventive keyboarding by Keith Emerson. Lake's voice really excels on this piece. This whole movement is based around computers taking over the world, with a robotic voice declaring war on humanity-played by Lake, there is strange whirlling hypnotic robotic noices with interesting keyboard effects to describe the battle between humanity and robots. The albums sleeve looks as if to give reference to this. 8.5/10 Overall an enjoyable journey and perhaps the finest ELP album to date. And if possible its better to get this on vinyl for the sleeve, the open up design is just incedible, HR Gigers painting is one of the most memorable works of art in the 20th century. This album is definately worth your time.

I saw that one as well. Confused me quite a bit.

Awesome thread, by the way.

Easy Livin:

I remember once i read a review of Close To The Edge that said something like "Anderson is a pedofilic man", or "writes pedofilic lyrics here", and that CTTE was the first album that introduced hip-hop on scene, do you have it anywhere?

HAWKWIND It Is The Business Of The Future To Be Dangerous
1 stars
by zorofaster
When you are really bored and nothing good comes out of you, you usually sigh, take a beer or watch the chickens getting philosofic on oats; all harmless and forgotten the next day. Hawkwind recorded quite a few of those moments and made a record of it. If they ever get the urge to do something like this again the should consider starting a stamp collection instead.
HAWKWIND It Is The Business Of The Future To Be Dangerous

by mystic fred
i really enjoyed this aural adventure on its release and still play it, i have always considered "it is the business of the future to be dangerous" one of hawkwind's better albums to my ears, if not equal to but at least as enjoyable as "electric tepee". this was made during a good period of hawkwind material, i agree they explored the ambient side of things here to an extent rather than actual songs, and a lot of people find this sort of thing boring, and tend to love or hate it but it works for me. i have listened to many ambient style albums but have found hawkwind's the most approachable. the album was originally released as a double lp but can now be purchased on a single cd. the sound quality is extremely good, making the most of the special effects. most of the ambient tracks, which blend well together, are based around a repeated theme interspersed with computerised sound effects with drums and percussion blended together. some interesting ideas here, i found the "space is their palestine/tibet is not china" tracks very effective, building up an aural image of that country, including singing tibetan monks! washes of synthesisers, great rhythms, soaring guitars, a good exercise for the imagination. i have played this album many times and still hear things i'd missed. the album flows along in a similar style until "letting in the past", "the camera that could lie" (amazing reggae-style beat), two of the three conventional songs (if conventional is the appropriate word for hawkwind!) break the mood. " 3 or 4 erections in the course of a night", "techno tropic zone exists" (interesting titles!), then "gimme shelter", an amazing version of the rolling stones song. "avante" is the last track on the album, some fast drum patterns over washes and layers of sound effects. overall a stimulating sound experience, an excellent addition to any ambient/space rock music collection, indeed i wish dave brock, the king of space rock, would go back to his studio and conjure up new sounds and images and create another album in this style, rather than "take me to your leader" which i found slightly disappointing - a bit too conventional!

a slight difference of opinion, the true essence of the review pages......so which unbiased in-depth review do YOU agree with, readers????
